Ok imagine this. You find a range in which you like/want every set,say Bulge for instance.Do you but it from set no1 and work your way through the range or do you buy it in any order as you please and not worry about retirements or collecting in order.I was just wondering if anyone has the sheer discipline to buy a range in the order its released. For instance i have the first few sets from the Bulge, the next set in order is 'Returning Patrol' which i think is a great set, however i love the latest releases and also want to get stuck into them.It would be very easy just to buy patrol but sometimes you want to buy a new set and not just feel your playing catch up all the time. What i guess i'm asking chaps is this; Head or Heart?

Rob

Heart.

That's what this hobby is about IMO, otherwise you can become a slave to a numbering system. In addition, the retired sets are usually still available for a year or two after retirement at the same price or only slightly more.

Or do a little bit of both. Buy a new release that you really want and one of the older releases.

Or take out a credit card with a £10,000 limit and go see Uncle Tony :).

:D Uncle Tony, sounds like a character in the Godfather!

Wise words Simon,i do really want to break out of my own regime and buy what takes my eye.For instance two sets from the latest Bulge releases are so cool. The Bazooka team and the guy helping his wounded mate, and i must have them!.Yep maybe its time to stop being so 'Squinky'!! (as Phoebe from friends would say)about my collecting. But i do like the credit card idea!;)

Hey Rob. Its a tactical tight rope for me. I lay out a plan and use my head, but then I'll go to a show and see the stuff and my heart takes over immediately. Then the tactical side comes in, as I shift the plan to accomodate my impulse. I think you need to go with your heart at times or it becomes too much like work. ;)

Hi Jim,yes you are right of course.Sometimes my planning does get a bit too like work,i think i'll chill and buy what i like.I am pleased to see its not just me that has this 'nice' dilemma!:)

I buy what I fancy. There are duds in every line and just the thought of buying something because of a stock number, is repugnent to me and a waste of resources. Better to have a collection of choice treasures rather than regrets....Michael

Until the beginning of 2006, you could probably take that approach because the releases weren't that often. But since then, forget it. I can't worry about what's being retired, unless it was something I was just putting off until it was retired.

And, yes, I agree with Michael, there are releases I just don't care for and don't want at all such as Heydrich Set (don't care if it's SL) and some of the Bulge releases ("Jest make sure he's dead").

There's a lot of stuff I'd like to get such as the FoB recent releases (only have a couple), new Crimea, Arnhem and LRDG but just can't do it. As the holiday season is coming and people will be asking me what I want, I will tell them LRDG (I need three there) and Arnhem.

I tend to agree with you here Michael.
As far as I'm concerned, the move towards 1, 2 & 3 figure sets suits me. I bought the BBA "Welcome to Bastogne" set because I simply had to get the guy with the BAR, but for the life of me I can't think where I'm going to use the guy with the kitbag?

If you have the Bulge Sherman maybe you could have the guy with the Kitbag talking to one of the officers from that set?

I tend to let my head rule my heart, in a way - although collecting these beautiful little models that I stumbled upon completely by chance not so long ago has now become a passion of mine, without a doubt - I discipline myself and limit myself to WW2 German lines, and not even all of them - LAH and anything identifiably SS is what I stick to.

As far as deciding what I want to buy next is concerned, I have a powerpoint presentation set up on the laptop with images of all the pieces I want and I simply buy what I 'feel' like whenever I can afford it. At all times, retired items take precedence - recently for example, a number of SS/LAH items have been retired so my hand has been forced so to speak - I don't want to run the risk of losing out on them (incidentally, see another post of mine put up today). I certainly don't buy according to production/release order, and I don't even concentrate on one particular 'line' before moving on - :D
