I have recently come across these series of books, published by Southern Illinois University. They are written by specialists in the field are around 160 pages in length and intended both for the specialist and the generalist. I have just picked up the one by Michael Burlingame, who has written a two volume biography of Lincoln. Here he discusses Lincoln and the Civil War and it's recommended.
