Thank you Chuck. One of the men in the 1142nd Combat Engineers of which my grandfather served, thought about being a conscientious objector in WWII. He has written his story and it is posted on the 1142nd website. His name is Nick Drahos.

Some think of a man to be simply male. A male can reproduce. A man is entirely different and separate from his reproductive organs. A man lives his life with meaning and substance. A man lives his life with honor, respect and in honesty. A man values the real things in life, like other human beings and life itself. A man does not live as the “hunter/provider” only; a man is a provider of things other than food or wealth.

I am not a believer in any form of a God. Nor, do I believe in religion in any form including atheism. I have not seen the movie but I have read about Desmond T. Doss, Sr., and I find he is a true man in every sense of the word.

I can say this from first hand experience when my life and the life of people I cared about was on the line. Because my prayers were answered .There is a higher power

There are more than one kind of courage. Mr. Doss was obviously blessed with both physical courage and the courage of his convictions. It must of been pretty difficult to be a conscientous objector during the Second World War, but Mr. Doss stuck by his convictions, and had the courage to earn the medal of Honor. That is the stuff of greatness.

One has to believe that a GOD walked with this man. Mr. Doss was a hero, the minute he chose to serve, whatever his feelings about taking another's life, or war.....I imagine that he would be ashamed, buy the cowards, today who would hide behind the title "conscientious objector " without ever having his personal belief system ,that duty to country means something other than staying home and being safe. I thank you for this info, because , today I learned that a man can hate war, but still be a warrior. What a difference in the loss of personal character and heart from a couple generations removed.......Michael

True warriors abhor war. They and only they can truly understand the price of war.You see images of men who glory in the destruction. They are psychos not warriors. Warriors fight to preserve life not destroy. I have noted that many warriors end up feeling shame over what they did in the past. I feel that this is another cost of war.

Heros are men who do something beyond what they are expected to do. The title of hero is over used today. I regret the usuage when I think upon it.

I don't know where I am going with this so I will stop here.
