I finally picked up a conte painted figures roman galley. A couple things surprised me. The painted resin galley slaves are detailed with lash marks on their backs. In addition the admiral, wine providing slave plus the tower spotter are metal.

The rowers are a nice touch, I know conte planned to re-release without them to keep costs down but it is nice touch as you can them through the slots between the decks and also when you look down in the hole from the deck. Definitely a grim job back in the day...

I don't get the Viking-Norman connection as opponents.I think have only heard of one battle/skirmish between them. The Normans came to England in 1066 basically after the viking raids.I don't know if the vikings ever raided Normandy after the French gave it to vikings who later became Normans. The movie "Warlord" is where The Normans fight Frisians.

Vikins were still invading Britain in 1066 . Many people blame them for Harolds loss at Hastings . He had just defeated a Viking force at Stamford Bridge near York 3 weeks earlier and route marched down to the Southern Coast to face the Normans.

I forgot about Stamford Bridge but direct confrontation between vikings and Normans I have not heard about.Saxons should be made in a viking range.

Hi Guys,

Here is a brief bit on the Vikings dealings in Normandy:

The French region of Normandy takes its name from the Viking invaders who were called Normanni, which means ‘men of the North’. The first raids began between 790 and 800 along the coasts of western France. They were carried out primarily in the summer, as the Vikings wintered in Scandinavia. In 845 a raid up the Seine reached Paris. After 851, Vikings began to stay in the lower Seine valley for the winter. Twice more in the 860s Vikings rowed to Paris, leaving only when they acquired sufficient loot or bribes from the Carolingian rulers. The Viking colonization of Normandy was principally by Danes, with a mix of Norwegian’s and Swedes. The merging of the Viking and native elements contributed to the creation of one of the most powerful feudal states of Western Europe, the Normans. The naval ability of the Normans would allow them to conquer England and southern Italy, and play a key role in the future Crusades.

That is a short summary of the impact of the Norse/Vikings in France, they were all over the place including deep into Russia and the Middle East. If you read any of the Military history magazines there are usually articles on them during the course of the year. Also on a side note the folks at W Britain's will be releasing a range of Vikings in the near future, so pop over to those threads and take a look.

very cool...

I wish someone would re-do Vikings...

Andrea Miniaturas have a nice kit of them. I have just finished painting the figures, the ship itself was already painted by the guy I bought it from...although a better work could have been done...could post pics if interested.

Certainly would like to see some pictures. This gallery was almost mine a couple of years ago, but the Canadian guy pulled out at the last moment and given the postage was horrendous, I was relieved. Just have to be satisfied looking at it in other's collections. Robin.
