I think the Cossack cavalry regiments became part of the 15th Cavalry Corps in early '45. The 15th SS division was not a cavalry division, but a Latvian grenadier division. -- Al

The 1st Cossack Div became the 15th SS Cossack Cavalry Corps in 1944. It had a total of 52.000 personnel ( Cossacks+ Germans). The 15th corps became part of the Waffen SS on the 26th of Aug 1944. The SS became resposible with supplying of the Corps. Both the Cossacks and the Germans could keep their uniforms and ranks and did not have to change into Waffen SS.In 1944 it fought on the Eastern Front. By early May they retreated into Yugoslavia and later into Austria where it surrendered to the British . The British handed over almost the entire Corps back to the Soviets .

They were turned back over to the Soviets, with predictable results. Almost the whole officer corps was executed and most, if not all, of the remaining cossacks were tossed into the gulags. -- Al

Whatever thier Political reasoning was for joining the Germans..good or bad they chose the wrong side and paid in full for thier actions!!...
Thanks again for some interesting insight into the Cossack of WWII.

The Cossacks were supportive of the Tsar and had a special relationship with him, often providing direct service. They fought against the Red Bolsheviks in the 1917 revolution and were very anti-communist.

Terry...The Cossacks obiously joined ranks with the German Army as a means to an end..ie They both hated the Communists and Stalin..But would they have fared any better had the Third Riech won WWII...probabaly not!!.
