Got a promotional email from a vendor. It included a link to it's Hobby Master sale, and a coupon code for an additional 10% off. I visited the website, and found the following after a little browsing:

http://www.diecastairplane.com/stor...x-Vraciu-USS-Intrepid-February-1944-1-32.html

http://www.diecastairplane.com/stor...U-S-Navy-USS-Essex-1944-1-32-New-Tooling.html

The posted prices do not include the coupon code which is 10inMarch for an additional 10% discount.

I don't quite know what to say about this. If you're interested in one of the models, those are absolutely smokin-hot deals. Percentage-wise, looks like over sixty percent off. While those two listings could be a mistake, they can be also be an attempt by the vendor to clear out his inventory. I simply don't know. I've bought a couple of models from them in the past without issue.

LOL, if something seems too good to be true...

The vendor already fixed the ads. It appears that someone must have fat-fingered the calculations for those models. BTW, the prices are still excellent. They're just not of the "fire-sale" variety that were posted half an hour ago!:redface2:

Edit: Still had the browser open from my original session to the vendor. Took some screen captures so that you might appreciate my original enthusiasm:

Again, those prices didn't include the extra 10% off. When I read that ad, you could have pushed me over with a feather. My wife gave me those models for Xmas and my birthday. She got free shipping, but still must have paid something like $450 for the pair!

Now you guys know why I'd rather build a scale model.

Problem is, the newer kits in 1/32 (and above) are awfully pricey. Recently paid $70 for a Hasegawa Bf-109F-4 /Trop and $100 for a Tamiya A6M2 Zero. Throw in the cost of paint, decals and other supplies, and the price runs up pretty darned quickly. Viewed through that prism, some of these diecast models can be viewed as a bit of a bargain.

Easy to fix. Simply jump in your wayback machine, returning to 1959, purchase an Aurora Fokker Dr.1 for .79 cents, a couple of bottle of Testor's paint at .19 cents apiece, a bottle of glue, and 'Bingo!', you have a completed model for less than $2.00 (depending on local tax). Can't beat that with a stick.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Hi Al,

I've just about sworn off buying vintage model kits. And it's not because "they all suck." Rather, it's the decals. Nine times out of ten, the sheets are completely roached. Then I find myself paying $15 for something that's not yellowed or falling part. Toss in the shipping and accompanying PITA, and the $70 kit starts to look a lot more reasonable. Darned if you do, darned if you don't.:redface2:

Agree with Moe, good plastic kits are expensive now. But for me with kits I have the freedom of building any models I want, the way I want it, and don't have to wait & pray for manufacturers to make them ^&grin . And if you live in Canada you will be lucky to see some 1:32 die cast planes in local stores, let alone to see them on sale...Buying from US would cost $48 US shipping to Canada for a single 1:32 diecast plane.

I'd still take the Hasegawa Hellcat, since you guys mentioned that kit, at retail, which is still about half as much as the sale price for this diecast. At $200-plus? Fuhgeddabowdit! Also, it's not about choosing to have any model of any particular subject, that is, it's not a choice between having a scale model or a diecast model. I like to build. Those of you who collect ready-made diecast models, that's great, but if you ever get to thinking that it's a bit pricey, try your hand at building a model.

In any case, I would rather have a 1/48 model, anyway. 1/32 models are a little large for me to display, though I do have some subjects in 1/32, too.

Prost!
