Awesome pic! look forward to more...

Very nice picture Ludwig, but..... to my humble knowledge there were no German ski troops in the Ardennes in 1944. Can you show me a picture or a document to proof I am wrong !( I want to learn more all the time about the BoB)
guy:)

Guy, The 6th SS Mountain division was there a few days into the fighting. Below is their unit patch.

6th SS Mountain Division Nord.png6th SS Mountain Division Nord.png

They were ski patrol troops commanded by Lothar Debes. They were also the only SS division ever to fight at the arctic circle.

Basically they were tough sons of guns....

Thank you for your interest.

For the record...my dio's will not always be necessarily completely accurate as I like to mix and match!!

Ludwig,

Nice sneak peak Ludwig.Looks like it will be an interesting diorama ! :salute:: I don't recall seeing that figure before. What set is he from ???

Ludwig,
The 6th SS gebirgsjäger Div did not fight in the Ardennes, they arrived too late for the Battle of the Bulge . They fought in January 1945 in The Vosges region( hills) in France ( which is not part of the Ardennes !!) In January during operation Nordwind in the Vosges there was only light snowfall certainly not enough for the use of ski troops.

He is a from a two piece set of Bulge German skiers but I do not have the number handy but I think it is BBG 010. I found them on Ebay needing a good home.............. the lads!!

I really appreciate your comments PA and since it is you......how about another sneak peek.......tonight?

I know Guy....I was trying to give you some research fun{sm4} You owe me for six hours of fun!! Ha Ha!!

No seriously Guy you are a more knowledgeable historian then I think you give yourself credit for. We can see it in your display work. I for one count you amongst the top five members that have got me into diorama making. First and foremost is Gordon N.'s work; Rob, yourself; Fire bat; Waynepoo who is mad at me right now:(. So many others as well...so no one please feel left out there are so many great artists and to you all I am a novice.

So without further ado I must continue on my work if I am to complete this thing on schedule...and I cannot believe how much you have to spend on diorama stuff. The trees cost more then real ones!!

It will be a tribute to Gordon N. as his work that I first saw years ago inspired it!

Also Guy, Do I need to change the title so you wont tear it apart again for were they here or not etc?^&grin

Sure Ludwig, Show it ! :smile2:

OK here we go...another sneak peek.....not to much too fast. Kind of reminds me of the story about the three legged pig...

Also this is occurring wherever it could have been or you want it to be...

Wehrmacht Soldier foolishly taking a smoke break....they did not have Chantix in the 40's.......

..will it give away their position............

Ludwig,How large are you planning on making the overall diorama.Also for snow you can use granulated wax as I have done in my bulge winter scenes.

Guy, Maybe there were Ski Troops after all...

This diorama is on page three of the KC web site under "Dramatic Display"

bbg.jpg

it is titled....: THE ARDENNES HITLERS LAST GABLE.....

What do you think?

I certainly will not tear apart your nice effort. The more dios the merrier;
But I want mine to be historically accurate. It is not because K&C makes a display and calls it "the Ardennes" that it is correct. ( I am sure there is a commercial aspect somewhere) The Ardennes is a region with dense forests everywhere and not suited for any ski troops
The Von Rundstedt offensive,as you call it, is another name for the German attack in the Belgian Ardennes region and Luxembourg. Also known as the BoB and "Wacht am Rhein" with the objective to reach the port of Antwerp. The 6th SS gebirgsjäger Div was not there and when they were thrown into battle , the BoB was over and they were hundreds of miles away to the south.
So by changing the name your problem is solved.

Guy, No problem my friend!!!

If Andy and Gordon have ski troops in their Ardennes then I feel pretty comfortable with them in mine. Also we do not know whether their were just a few ski bums in one of the units that brought theirs along for practice!!{sm4}

Either way we settle for winter display none the less that will encompass many goodly things!!

Ludwig
