Yo Troopers, just bought a DVD with 800 Crimean War photo's only cost £2.20 and to be honest I never gave it a thought that the camera had been invented in 1854. BUT sitting there going through the photo's really brings home the reality of what war is about ie; you look at your Toy Soldiers in my case all Cavalry in their magnificent uniforms and a picture gets painted in your minds eye. Then you look at the real photo's and what a rude awakening you get, a lot are of Balaklava pre battle and I have never seen such a Godforsaken place in my life. Not one blade of grass not one tree just a total rocky barren landscape, looking away from the valley of death its just miles of flat rocky terrain, nowhere to shelter from the winds except tents, which again surprised me Indian style Tepee tents. Then you look into the faces of Troopers, Scots Regiments & officers that died in the Crimean, and all you can see is total dejected demoralized scruffy 99% with beards half way down their chest looking Troops, even the horses look totally bedraggled half starved looking creatures, and you think the camera never lies, its not like these paintings you see of the battle. One really interesting photo was of a horse drawn wagon similar to those you see in the wild west movies selling miracle cures for a $ a bottle, printed on the side was Photograpic van, must have done their photo's on site amazing its 1854. Will from now on look at this war in a different light, and by the way you can see graves dotted all over the place, but you think its no wonder so many troops died before going into battle when you see the conditions they had to put up with. This would be a great DVD for you Diorama guys its all layed out for you to copy.
