I felt a lot older to see Letterman call it quits last night. I probably haven't watched his show much in the last decade but used to watch it all the time when he first started out. Letterman was basically the last connection to Johnny Carson. That seems like ancient history, but Carson was a staple of American TV for decades. Most people under 40 probably wouldn't even recognize him now. I remember attending the Carson show once and remembering how weird it was that they taped the show in the afternoon, but still ran the commercials on a video screen during the breaks. They would turn all the lights out in the studio and Carson and his guest would sit in complete darkness without saying a word. Carson would smoke a cigarette which he put out just before the lights went up. Letterman was always a funny and edgy guy. You sort of wonder how it would have worked out if he had been given the Tonight Show after Carson left.

Been a hoot watching the countdown to the final show, with all the different celebs dropping in to say 'adios'. I really enjoyed Letterman and Carson and will probably have to get used to one of the other guys now. Will give Colbert a shot or maybe Fallon, but they sure aren't going to be the same as watching the originals like Carson or Letterman. Was never a Leno fan. Goodbye, Dave. -- Al

I stopped watching shortly after he left NBC and the 12:30 slot for CBS and 11:30. He wasn't nearly as funny after that, as he was before. He was doing the same stuff, over and over.

I guess they never heard of ebay. They could have at least auctioned some of this stuff off for charity:

"Just hours after Letterman said farewell after 33 years on late-night TV, Ed Sullivan Theater crews hauled off blocks of blue stage and hacked up pieces of the iconic New York City bridges that made up the set of the “Late Show.”

Fans and passers-by gathered around a police barricade cordoning off the Ed Sullivan to watch workers unceremoniously chuck red theater chairs into an overflowing Dumpster and take reciprocating saws to his miniature Brooklyn Bridge."

I never found him that funny either. Frankly, the whole concept of that sort of entertainment show in this day and age is one that I think has come and gone.

I was hoping Chris Elliot would get one last cameo as the conspiracy guy or the guy under the floor. He also did a killer Brando impersonation.
