Dealer Poll (1 Viewer)

Lets do a pole to see how many are dealers and how many are collectors.Even if you sell the odd time I would be curious to know the ratio for this Forum...not sure if anyone else would be interrested..

Hoegermeyer is also a dealer (Quartermaster Corps), but only a new member to the forum, if I am not mistaken.

I think criteria to sort them out would include:

1. Whether a person has a business license, vendor license, or other documentation as may be required for a business, by the country, state or district
2. Whether he maintains a bricks-and-mortar store, or a website, for the purpose of selling figures

There may be more that we could think of (which is why I wrote "would include", and not "consist of"), but those are two that come to mind, that would tend to sort out true commercial ventures from guys who sell extras through Internet contacts like this forum, or occasionally take a table at a show, or at a flea market some place.

For me, I'm a collector, but I have traded some of my figures with other guys who had things I wanted. I haven't tried selling anything yet, but when I see some of the things up for auction on eBay, I think that I probably should. The money could go towards more figures, molds, metal, paints, etc.

I zink ze baron has it right. Listing stuff on ebay trying to further ones own collection does not a dealer make. Even if one speculates on a couple of pieces. I sometime think I would love to be a dealer. Two things against that thought. One I take it a little personal when things do not sell. Second I am not sure I want to ruin my hobby for myself. It would be fun to paint toy soldiers and make them for myself. I am not sure that I could make a living out of it. Look at all the makers who have fallen by the wayside.

It may be wise to consult some tax advice before answering this sort of poll. Do the tax authorities ( all blessings and peace be upon them) not distciguish between collectors and dealers when looking at sale of personal collections etc.

There are lots of dealers on the forum--I counted around 30 just scrolling through the members list and that was not taking manufacturers who sell directly to collectors into account.
This affirms my goal of having the Treefrog forum be a global meeting place for all--collectors, dealers and manufacturers alike. Cool!

KV, that is an excellent point. How many have tried to start making money at this, and found that it stopped being fun. Let's face it, business is work. For a fortunate few, they may work at something they love, but I think the still understand that you have to do the work. For a hobbyist, if he gets up and doesn't feel like casting, painting or whatever, he can always say, "I'll do it later." But if you're running it as a business, you have to meet your obligations.
