Domitian invaded Dacia in 86 AD. Under the command of the Praetorian Prefect Cornelius Fustus the V Alaudae was ambushed and destroyed at the first Battle of Tapae. The Pratorian Aquila was lost and the Praetorian Prefect was killed. Decebalus commanded the Dacian forces as a general under the leadership of King Diurpaneus. The battle was near the Iron Gates on the north side of the Danube River.DSCF2897.JPGDSCF2894.JPGDSCF2893.JPGDSCF2888.JPGDSCF2892.JPG

The photos show the last stages of the battle, with the few remnants of Legio V Alaudae defending the eagle to the last man.

Good to view, some inspiring stuff for my growing Roman collection. Robin.

I like the lighting on the background.Looks like early morning starting to break through.

The figures are a mix from different sources. The Romans are Conte and TCS; both companies figures feature dynamic combat poses necessary for a battle diorama. The Barbarian figures are also a mix from K&C, Conte and Del Prado. My favorite Barbarian figure is the Conte German with the Romans head on a pike, a wonderful sculpt IMO.

I am currently working on a diorama of the Siege of Aquileia in 168 AD by the Marcomanni.
