Deutschland 83 is an eight-episode German television series. Was shown on the Sundance Channel and available on Amazon Prime. It might
be better if you actually lived in Germany in the 1980's.

In a divided Germany in 1983, naive 24-year-old East German soldier Martin Rauch is pulled from his benign post as a border guard and given a new assignment: undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany. Hiding in plain sight as Moritz Stamm in the West German army, Rauch must gather NATO military secrets. As he veers between father figures, love interests, and East and West Germany, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal.

BL,

Man I got to get SUNDANCETV added to my cable! I am pissed it did not come in my package.

Perhaps it is available on DVD. I was over there from 1979 until 1988, but only made one brief trip to Berlin by road. Border guards were not smiling but they were polite and did not act inappropriately toward me or anyone else in my party.

I have enjoyed this series very much here in the UK. My wife, who hates subtitled films or programmes watched it and commented on how absorbing it was that she forgot the sub titles.

I can heartily reccomend this to anyone.

Malcolm.

I watched this when it was first released on Hulu and enjoyed it very much.
Anyone looking to see it could sign up for Hulu for $10/month and cancel after the first month. Make sure it's still on there before doing so though! {sm4}

There seem to be a good things on Hulu but, seriously, how can you find the time to watch everything.

It is also available on Amazon as a DVD. https://www.amazon.com/gp/your-account/order-history?ie=UTF8&ref=ya_orders_css

I never had any problems with the border guards either. I took the troop train once and flew into Tempelhof several times. Was not comfortable
with the skimming roof top landings at all. Out of nowhere the red roof appeared with what seemed like inches

Once while in the East went to some Russian War memorial. Met up with a group of Russian soldiers. They were great fun despite the language
barrier. The beer helped.

Anyway Deutschland '83 brought back memories of the time spent freezing my six while on the Fulda Gap.

Landing at Tempelhof on a clear day. Usually at night or socked in fog.

I'll have to look for it. I was there in '84-'85, with a stay in West Berlin and visits to East Berlin.

Another great series to watch is Heimat, which follows the history of Germany from just before the First World War up to the Wirtschaftswunder, through the eyes of a family in small town in the Hunsrück on Germany's western border. It aired here in the US in the 80s on PBS. It's available on DVD.

Prost!

Thanks for the heads up on the series Heimat. I found it on Amazon. Not cheap. I missed it first time
around. Probably because AFN was limited in the '80's. The Heimat Trilogy runs some 53 hours.

If I remember correctly, there was a sequel, too, that picked up the storyline in the 80s, with the next generation. I never saw that one.

When, "Our Mothers, Our Fathers" came out, it reminded me of Heimat, too. It was another milepost on the Germans' path to deal with their history in the 20th century.

Prost!

Actually as I find out there are two sequels. The first one was five years in the making, and is one of the most compelling and highly praised dramas in television history. It was 10th in Channel 4's '50 Greatest TV Dramas'. I still can't be;ieve I missed it.
