I wouldnt want to handle the munitions either since I have seen shells from the ACW that were recovered with functional black powder inside. I also know they recover shells from the WWI battlefields that are still quite deadly so I hope the guy is really careful when he handles that sort of stuff. Still the things he has found are amazing.

You are spot on there,WW1 munitions are still killing,Farmers, tourists, bomb disposal experts and children 90 yrs on.There are some truly horrendous stories from France and Belgium. You see these shells piled up at the edge of fields all over the Western front, lots of Brit tourists stop to look to the amusement of local folk. But you have to be very careful, some are leaking Gas after the casing has rusted away,a lung full of Mustard Gas would be a hideous souvenir to take home.

I once pulled on what I thought was the bottom of a large Shell splinter near High Wood, the next second to my horror I was holding a whole shell in my hands.Turning to look at my wife who was about 100 yards away,if the Shell didn't explode and kill me,she sure was going to!!;)

Hi Rob

I went to Verdun with a large group of Army Offciers on Terrain Walk and discussion of the battle. We found all kinds of dangerous things there so we had to make sure we were very careful when walked around looking at the site since we were in areas considered off the beaten path and let me tell you I saw tons and tons of 75mm shell laying around and even found a place where a battery mush have been for a while because there were shell casings mixed in with some live shells.

Another time and location we used for all of our maneuver training in Germany our NBC teams detected Mustard Gas and it was in high enough concetrations that it set off the alarms on their vehicle. Needless to say that was exciting. Got General officer attention including the Germans. So needless to say but I am extra carefull when I am out dinking around on a battlefield.
