Does anyone have any interest in dimestore soldiers we have had someone approach us with a big collection of dimestores in mint condition and are trying to gauge interest or useful resources on thes soldiers. I have the book by richard O'brien collecting american made soldiers are there any others

They have really fallen in value over the years. Used to be that a common figure in very good to excellent condition would bring $20 +. Now they are a fraction of that as the collectors age out of the hobby. This figures which seem to hold value most are the old NYC Police figures and motorcycles along with some of the very rare pieces.

Find out what this persons expectations are. O'Briens books are a good guide to what was produced but I never really understood the basis of his price guides.

I really like dimestore toy soldiers and have just started collecting them. I think they're very interesting and have a subtle innocence to them, which contrasts nicely to the very high end K&C figures which I also enjoy collecting. In addition, I like them because I can imagine someone have actually played with them back when they were originally made, as opposed to K&C, which aren't meant to be played with, other than in creating dioramas.

Hi Sarge,

I appreciate your post. I, too, enjoy the dimestore figures for the very same reasons. In fact, I played with them when they were originally available and they provided many hours of fun for me.

An excellent reference for dimestore figures is: American Dimestore Toy Soldiers and Figures by Don Pielin, Norman Joplin, and Verne Johnson. It is a hard back book that is available for a very competitive price through Amazon.com. It is full of wonderful glossy photographs of dimestore figures and it includes information regarding the history of companies that produced the dimestore figures. I think you would very much enjoy perusing this book.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

You answered your own question,,collectors aged out or passed away,,obriens prices reflected what was happening then, the same happening to Britains old figures now as stated already, just as K and C will pass with the up coming types .

With most price guides, I don't get the concept. Are they pricing their own collections and then trying to drive prices to a level they want to see?

I always enjoyed books which left the prices out. You know, the more coffee table and information rich books. The $'s assigned to the items in a book, I feel, appeals to that "that's out reach but I lust after it" or "I have that and this validates how much I think it's worth".

The discrepancy between real world prices and what's in the book have generally been pretty large.
