Looking to purchase my first display cases, curious if anyone on the board to give me any insight outside of going to my local furniture store?

Ikea single shelve cabinet!:D

I have actually seen about 14 other people witht them!:D:cool:

The Ikea Billy system I like. Here are 3 on one wall and 2 on opposite wall. You can place one and then add on over time. The cabinet in the second photo far right is Martha Stewart item you can get at K-MART for ~225$ and very well made, but does not let the light in well - too deep.

And one standing (I am not sure about the maker but I believe it's Stanley):

They are both in Cherry wood finish...

I also have an IKEA Billy system too in my crowded apartment in Hong Kong

I got customized spot lights inside as well which cost me about 12 US dollars per light bulb.

My only problem is that it is not deep enough, so I didn't get the K&C Hitler's Berchtesgaden yet because it doesn't fit.

It fits the figarti diorama farm house quite well.

Pics to follow soon.

I have a few also and wish they were a bit deeper as well

Hi Gulfporteagle77,

In my display room, I have five tall curio cabinets and a 3/4 height curio. In addition I have a number of wall mounted curios and some table top curios. I am assuming you are interested in a curio that is tall and rests on the floor. My advice is to take your time and shop carefully for a curio that truly meets your needs. I encourage you to pay special attention to the following factors:

1.) Carefully measure the space in which you plan to place your curio cabinet. Use these measurements when shopping for your curio. These measurements can become quite important when you consider some of the factors listed below.

2.) I recommend that you only purchase curios that have adjustable shelves and internal lighting. While these elements may seem obvious, there are many cabinets that do not include adjustable shelves or lighting, so you want to check each potential purchase for these items. I have posted a picture below that demonstrates the need for adjustable shelves. You will see the elephant in the picture requires greater space for display than do the figures marching behind the elephant. Adjustable shelving allows you to adjust the height of each shelf to accomodate the figures you wish to display.

3.) Make certain you can remove the shelves from the cabinet. I have seen curios that have adjustable shelves, but you cannot remove them from the cabinet. If you cannot remove the shelves from the cabinets, you cannot add additional shelves! Further, if you have such a cabinet and you want to adjust the internal shelves, you may have to unload the entire cabinet to accomplish the task. As a word of warning, if you have any doubts whatsoever, ask the merchant to demonstrate the removal of a shelf. I have encountered merchants who honestly believe the shelves can be removed from a specific cabinet until they attempt to do so. The problem is usually caused by wide shelves and a small front door access.

3.) Pay special attention to how you access the inside of cabinet. There are three different types of entries to the inside of a curio: a) swinging front door entry, b) entry through side doors, and c) entry via sliding front doors. Each has advantages and disadvantages. I shall summarize my experience with each type of entry.

3a.) Swinging front door entry: Swinging front door entry allows frontal access to your shelving. In many cases, this is the easiest way to access each shelf, but you must make certain you have allowed ample room for the door to swing completely open. If you are considering a front entry cabinet, be sure to measure the space in your room that is necessary for the door to swing completely open.

3b.) Side entry: Side entry helps minimize the space necessary for the placement of your cabinet. However, if the cabinet is a wide one, you must reach greater distances to place your figures. I have one tall cabinet that allows entry only on one side and it is a significant pain to place figures on the side of the shelf that has no door.

3c.) Sliding front doors: Many of the nice cabinets allow entry through a door that slides from side to side. Such an arrangement provides easy access to each shelf. The disadvantage of this arrangement is that you must allow space on either side of the cabinet for the door to slide open. Such an arrangement does not work well in the corners of a room. Also, if you purchase additional sliding door cabinets and you wish to place them side by side, you must allow sufficent space between them for the doors of each cabinet to fully slide open. Once again, make certain you take careful measurements to allow for the proper placement of your cabinet(s).

Having stated the above, you might ask my preference. In my most recent purchases, I have opted for the sliding front door cabinets. I have posted a couple photos of several of my matching cabinets below. As you will see, I took these photos shortly after my new cabinets were delivered. The cardboard containers in front of the cabinets contain the glass shelves which are to be installed in the cabinets. You will also notice the space between the cabinets. The space is necessary for the doors of each cabinet to slide entirely open. You can use the vacant space between the cabinets for additional display space by placing shelving between the cabinets. However, the dimensions of this additional shelving must allow the sliding doors to pass in front of it. The use of wall mounted shelving, CD towers, etc. should work reasonably well in these vacant spaces.

4.) Finally, I recommend the purchase of curios that include locks. There are people who will naturally reach out to pick up a figure for examination and a locked cabinet prevents anyone from handling your figures without your permission.

I hope my thoughts are helpful to you. Let me know if you have any additional questions concerning my experience with curio cabinets. I will be glad to respond to your questions.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat those are some good looking curio cabinets you have there. You most post some pictures once you fill them up. In addition to your comments I would like to add that depth should be measured as well. I bought the Figarti Storch and currently I don't have a Curio that is deep enough for it so I have to display it on my desk until I get a new curio cabinet. Also you might want to try Craigslist. I bought a curio cabinet that sold for $1300 for $100. The person sold it because there was not front piece of glass but the rest of the cabinet was in mint condition. I had Henderson glass come out place a new piece of glass in it for $210 and it was as good as new.

Hi Sahara,

Thanks for adding your comments concerning the depth of the shelves. In my haste, I forgot to add that important element. Further, your suggestion of checking Craig'slist is a good one.

Thanks also for your kind comment regarding my curio cabinets. These pictures were taken a year ago. Presently, for all practical purposes, the curios in the photos are full. Given enough time, I will take some more photos of the contents of the cabinets.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Yo Troopers, now you all know what type of cabinets to get after Pat writing a book on it lol:D. BUT you horrible excuse for soldiers FORGOT the most IMPORTANT PART. What glass goes in the cabinets. We all have children, or Grandchildren, nephews, nieces, friends visitors kids, that will be drawn to the cabinets like a moth to a light. This actually happened to me, have mentioned it before, my little Trooper when he was one slipped and went head first into the glass door of my cabinet, he had a right bruise on his forehead. But luckily his Dad was one step ahead of him and had put laminated glass in the cabinet. I hate to think what the outcome would have been if I hadn't thought of the danger. So you horrible lot give it some thought for the kids safety;).
Bernard.

Tempered glass front side and shelves capable of holding lots of weight. Shelf units from "Solutions" 6 large cabinets with 4 non-adjustable shelves. Each shelf can hold a 22in x 13 in display.

Cheers I was looking at the same ones a few weeks ago. Great display you have in yours and I think after seeing yours I may get a couple of them. Looks like they will work out well for my collection.

They are not as well made as Ikea, a bit harder to assemble and more expensive, but the double door version gives the extra width that is so important, and they do go on sale.
