Here is a subject we can talk about - which is of great interest to me & others I am sure. Do you Display all your figures or do you buy and store?

I really started off buying Toy Soldiers with displays in mind with my sets. I sometime would not buy until I have display space already set up - because I didn't want to buy and stick in closet. But, now I foind myself buying things I like or things that could be retired soon and just storing them and worry about displaying later. This sometimes bothers me - due to the fact I hate not having these beautiful figures out for enjoyment.

Space is becomming a problem and I was wondering how you guys deal with this issue??

Ron

I'm in a similar boat. I want to use my K&C and other items to create vignettes or scenes, but due to lack of space I haven't set them up. However, one needs to get their K&C items when they are available, so I have a number of boxes stowed in the basement waiting for "their turn".

How do I deal with it? By trying to learn self-control and not buying everything that comes out (even though I really want several of each GI item). I try to think about what I need to add to existing ideas, or what might create a manageable new scene. For instance the "General Inspection" set and the M12 with crew come to mind as something that can be set up as a small-ish scene on their own, whereas the "St,Mere Eglise" or "Bastogne" scenes will be larger multi-vehicle scenes. Anyway, I have also been assessing my needs and have learned to sell some older items as new ones come out. I just put a DD14 Jeep on eBay so I can "upgrade" to the new Patrol Jeep this summer. I had to tell myself I just didn't need four K&C jeeps!

I keep hoping to find space for displaying my stuff.

For me its display everytime.I may store other soldiers i've collected since childhood but i couldn't store K&C,their too good!

I have cabinets for my WW2 stuff and i have plenty of shelves for the coming Napoleonic wars, all this is upstairs in my study. Its a different world in there.Wellington fights Napoleon,Rommel fights Monty and soon the Kaiser will take on the Brits and French. All in one little room!

K&C;TOO GOOD TO HIDE!:)

Rob

Both. Even with a three room display area (800 square feet) I don't have the space to display everything. For now, I am displaying virtually all of my K&C (i.e. whatever I have found in storage I have put out, but I'm still missing about a dozen sets that must be mixed in with the non-K&C stuff) as well as my Figarti, Honour Bound and Heco stuff. The rest of my collection is in storage (probably another 2000 figures or so). As I obtain more K&C, I try to put it all out (pretty soon I am going to be moving my display cases perpendicular to the wall, back to back, so I can set out about twice as many display cases, with more room for dioramas on the top of the doubled up cases), but at the rate Andy is going, pretty soon I am going to run out of room.

Display but I have a few sets that I've had to store. However, I'm hopeful to get a new display case (won't be huge, however) to display more. But, it's a losing battle.

I buy with intent to display. However space is always a problem. I rotate my displays. This alows me to keep things looking fresh and new(ish). Small Vignettes of a few figs. and vehicles, can fill corners and the tops of shelves.

I buy intending to display. I pass on many figures or vehicles simpy because to me, they just don't work. I am actually pretty excited when I look around the basement because one day, when my curtain climbers ETS from this post and move to the next, THIS BASEMENT WILL BE MY FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE!!:D

I create dios based on historical battles or campaigns that I am interested in.

This is a good thread as I have a question that ties into this discussion somewhat- what % of your defense budget do you allocate to dio materials? Congress (ie the wife) typically approves a $1,200- $1,700 annual defense budget- I drop about $100-$200 on dio material in a year and I feel I am woefully underfunded. Truth be told though, I think it is better to gobble up the figs now and then do the dios when I have taken over the basement.

Chris

That is interesting too - dio materials .... I want to spend more on that - but, I feel that I am missing out on getting the figures. I really like setting up historically correct scenes with my figures - that way you can tell a story when people look.

I probally have spent about $500 in materials this year so far - tree, grass, Dept 56, and paint. I want to try my hand at custom painting buildings at some point. But, once I am ready to buy this stuff - TADA, Andy releases a M12 :(

I really dislike storing K&C figures - but, space, space, space - better to have and get space later than not have at all......and buy later on Ebay

Yes Ron. Playing catch up on Ebay is doing it the hard way,And the expensive way!
Storage presents it's own set of problems as well. Tempeture extremes in attics, sheds, and garages. Mice, silverfish,, etc.
It is better to have and hold I believe, than to seek out later and perhaps pay more.

I solved my storage problem by renting a climate controlled storage area. Not large expenditure in my area. For some of you living in the northeast I sure this is not the case.

Its really sad when you buy these great figures and then put them away in hopes that one day you will be able to display them

I dont have the problem when it comes to the extras that I buy of a Tank or Figure - to me thats just stock. But, when you get that special Tank - agh...you just want to display it - dont you?

I just can't store away K&C, surely thats a crime of some sort!.I think the day i can't show them i'll have to stop buying them...no thats never going to happen, the wife will just have to buy me a bigger house:)

Rob

I wish I could display all - must find more Curios - but, they cost money and take away from future King and Country purchases - its just a vicious circle isnt it?

Yep its all about money and room isn't it.Can you imagine winning the lottery Ron,i'd buy a house with a massive bit of land.I'd build a hall on it in which i'd construct a huge Waterloo battle scene, made entirely of K&C Product.

Dream,dream,dream

Rob :)

Yeah defiantely - I always ask myself "Ok, where is this thing going to go?" before I buy a piece as well. If I can't answer that immediately, I don't get it.
It just seems odd to me to buy stuff and then sock it away somewhere- not to insult anyone as I am sure you would agree. It just struck me as odd one day when I tallied how much I had spent on my collection and then most of it was stored away!! Seems a waste of money to me. So, I remedied that situation.

I hear you - but, you know if you dont buy it at retail price now - you end up going ahhh mannn I should have bought that back then and you finding your self paying Ebay Prices - Hellcat Tank for me - You See?

Thats why the hard decision comes and you pick and choose what do you really need to get now and hold - because if its retired its gone forever.

Ron

Oh Man

Have I been busy putting together all my empty K&C boxes and getting them to the storage unit. I feel like I have two collections now - 1) My Soldiers and 2) Their Boxes

How does everyone else handle this problem?

Do some of you just throw the boxes away? Or how do you store them all?

Inquiring Minds Want To Know ?

I put my boxes in safe storage boxes and put them in the loft. They are warm and dry up there and out of harms way.Apart from the ltd edition boxes which i keep downstairs, however sooner or later they will have to go up too.
