In recreating a farm scene for AWI / ACW era do these Schleich cows work for that period? The scale and detail seems ok for something in a pen in the background, but are they completely wrong to try and pull off as breeds of cattle / oxen around from that time?

At around £4.00 an animal (and they do other farm animals as well) it seems quite reasonable.

If you're not averse to painting your own, M'Lud, there are also some available as resin or styrene kits. Andrea, for example, and I think Verlinden, have cattle and other farm animals in resin, and Tamiya has a set of barnyard animals in styrene, which require assembly, of course. Those are all in true 1/35.

Personally, I'm acquiring old Britains farm animals for use with mine. They usually require repainting, though, and sometimes some repairs.

Prost!

For price and the detail you can't beat Britains :p:eek::);)

Did they make any, though? I know Ken said there might be some down the road, but as I recall, they haven't done glossy, much less matt animals for a looooooooooooooong time....

Sorry, my mistake I was actually talking about the plastic animals they have done over the years before 1st Gear and the split etc...

On the back of one catalog, it said, "...farm animals... coming 2010" I also heard Ken say something about that. It would be very nice!

Ken posted it quite some time ago. Still no word on it's release though. It was to be part of the Jane Austen series.

I think the addition of animals would make be jump on the wagon !! There are a few figures from the Jane Austen series I would like to get along with the pub.
