In July, I was at the War and Peace show in Kent, and the BBC filmed me and my friend Pete blowing up a 105mm gun. Because we do 2nd Rangers this was to re-enact Len Lomell and Jack Kuhn, two 2nd Rangers, blowing up a 155mm on D-Day. I was Lomell and Pete was Jack. The documentary will be shown in early next year I believe, we are also doing some more filming soon, this time of a beach landing.
Would be nice to see King and Country bring out a commemerative piece of a 155mm, with a German crew sold seperately. And two figures, of Lomell and Kuhn. The pair went on a two man patrol and found the German 155 guns in a orchard with none of the crews in sight. Lomell had a thompson and wrapped his m41 around is to smash the 155mm gun's sights, and used thermite (type of incendary) grenades to melt the breech of the gun. He opened the breech and put one in before closing it agan. Kuhn kept lomell covered with his m1 rifle. At this point in D-Day they would have discarded certain parts of their kit.
Lomell and Kuhn wouldn'd have worn assault vests or gaiters, as when climbing the rocks the hoos were known to snag on the ropes. 2nd Rangers had only tan webbing, or transitional, but no green. So just boots and hbt trousers which they would blouse with bungees. Lomell was a First Sergeant and Kuhn was a Staff Sergeant. They would both have had m3 Knifes, canteens with tan covers, tan first aid pouches. They would have discarded their shovels by now, however one of them may have had the shovel cover still on their belt. They never landed with their m-1928 packs on as they had to climb the ropes on Pointe Du Hoc. They would have had wire cutters in a transitional or tan pouch. Their helmets would have been marked according with their rank, horizontal white stripe.
