I don't know how many of you listen to sports radio but WFAN is the grand-daddy of sports radio, or at least one of the first, started back in 1987.

There would be many a night in the early days when I couldn't sleep and listen to the station at night. Well, one of the constant callers was Doris Bauer, a huge Mets fan, known to listeners of WFAN, whether you rooted for the Mets or the Yankees, as Doris From Rego Park. She would call very late and due to a medical condition would caught a lot. That is what, in fact, made her distinctive. Doris died in 2003 but just in time for spring training a fan has written a song about her and there is an article about his paean to her in today's New York Times. Here is the song that is on Youtube.

Great little article and brought a tear to my eye. This may not mean much to many of you who don't live in the New York or listen to WFAN but to those who do, it will bring back memories of Doris. Everyone knew Doris. She is missed.

That's a great story Brad. One interesting thing about the modern world is that it's almost easier to hear from people around the globe via internet forums than someone in your local area. I can remember as a kid when the radio and TV had a local element to it. Now most are owned by huge corporations and many of the "local" elements are gone entirely or soon will be. Local newspapers are doomed. Local radio programming is mostly controlled by the corporations. I read that some "local" DJs just pretend to be from your area and actually are located elsewhere. That's even kind of spooky to think of some radio guy in LA doing his broadcast as though he is in rural PA. Kids in NYC and rural areas watch the same shows on NICK, MTV and Disney cable stations. A definite trend away from localism to globalism. Whether that's good or bad is anyone's guess, but I do miss some of these local characters getting their 15 minutes of fame.
