I just bought the William Britain American Civil War Dunker Church WB 17151, hastily opened the box and found the model has only three sides! Is this correct, was the model produced back in 2000 with an open back....surely not!??

Just wondered if any WB aficionados can shed light on this mystery??

Yes, only three sides. I would also put a few pieces of tape on the inside seams because it falls apart easily if bumped into.

Thanks for confirming that, i spent time checking and rechecking the packaging so much so that I got Mrs Evzone in on the act. But why make the model with only three sides....?

I would say it cuts down on the cost(both of the product and for shipping), easier to pack perhaps.

I know my Witt Hospital only has 3 sides which is good as it weigh a tonne as it is.

I think they wanted it to open up so you could put troops inside, but I don't like it. They should have four sides with a removeable wall. Otherwise you are limited to where you can place the building in the diorama. Now you'll either have to scratch build a wall using balsa wood or try to fit a wall from the Americana/BMC Meade's Headquarters or Dunker Church and Paint to match what you have. Or you could place it at the back of your set up with the big gapeing hole hidden.

Couldn't agree with you more mate.......I'll have to put this one down to a bad buy. I might even give it a new paint job to help erase the memory!

Thanks for the replies chaps!

I have had mine for quite a few years now .....and have moved it 3 times to different cabinet and have noticed the paint flaking is any one else noticed this .....

I don't blame you for being disappointed either. I really don't care for the 3 sided buildings and it sure would be a bummer to get one when I thought I was getting a full one.;)

my surprise at the three walls was tempered by the fact that I got in on ebay for the equivalent of $20. So probably would have been happy with even just 2 walls:D

I remember when this building was shown as a prototype at the Chicago show by RC2, the owner of W. Britain at the time.
The prototype version was also longer, making it the correct proportions to the real reconstruction at Antietam Battlefield. I believe that the original structure was lost to a storm and the new one, so to speak, was built on the original foundations.
I also recall that the model was shown with all four sides... the production model was very disappointing with the revisions in size and the omission of the rear wall. I have been told that this was done for two reasons: To keep the box size reasonable and to keep the retail price down.
What a shame.

Hi Guys:

Please note that the new 18th/19th Century Farmhouse and Barn we have done are both four sided with lift off roofs so you can have the best of both worlds.

Best Regards,

Richard

I happen to be a fan of the Dunker Church. I think it looks cool on the shelf in my toy room. If you turn the lights down low you can't even notice the missing wall.

....if you turn the lights off you can't even notice the wretched model is in the room!
