There was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake 45 miles SE of Mexacali, Mexico this afternoon. Although some 50 miles away from here (North County San Diego) , it was by far the strongest and longest I've ever experienced. Most of the troops in my display cabinet were knocked down and a couple knocked off the workbench and broken. However, they were the only casualties I've found so far and should be repairable. Hope others in this area faired as well.

That should be 150 miles away . . . not 50.

Al,

Sorry to hear...something people in quake areas need to consider. Luckily the whole cabinet didn't lay down!

There was one in Indonesia today. Is it me or have there been an awful lot of big ones lately.

Yes, they got a 7.7 one pretty close to the location where they got a 9.1 one 6 years. Fortunately this time, there doesn't seem to be much damage or casualties. Indonesia is on the Ring of Fire like South and Central America, the US West Coast (where I am), Alaska, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, etc.

I went through a pretty big one in LA '92. The aftershocks are what fry your nerves. Living in a 17 story building was not good.

No thank you! I like my earth to be stable and solid. Especially if I am not at ground level!:eek:

Ive been through 2 and have to tell you they are an eye opener. We missed the big one they had up here in the Olympia area but everyone tells me it was a wild ride. Would like to avoid that experience again...

Al,

I was in LA at a stop light...the one that traps you under the huge concrete overpass...got to say that is my biggest phobia. I was just telling my wife the day before that earthquake as we sat under the overpass, if one hits now, I'm mashing the throttle and I'm going to push everyone out of the way...even took it to the extreme and wondered if my Honda minivan would even move anyone?...then I thought imagine a small one and over reacting on a 3.0 and doing that! Huh?

I was in my office (6th floor) during the Nisqually earthquake (6.8) we had here in WA State in 2001. The building (fortunately new construction) was swaying like a blade of grass in the wind. I thought that was it but fortunately after 40s things stopped falling around me from the shelves and everything went back to stand still mode. I was a little shaken though but no one was hurt and no damage. I have experienced other earthquakes in Japan and Taiwan (7.0) but building in these countries (especially Tokyo/Taipei) are built to withstand 8.0+ earthquake so you don't even feel them that much, in fact I was sleeping through both :).
