I all ways wondered about the name of "eBay". Does anyone know what the letters E B A Y may stand for, in other words does each letter stand for a name or term????

AuctionWeb, as it was originally called, was renamed eBay. It is short for Echo Bay,

Thanks for fast reply back. Ah, so it went from "AuctionWeb" to "EchoBay". Now does "EchoBay" or "eBay" relate to anything or mean anything?? I learned just recently that eBay was started in 1997 or only about 15 years back.

Gary...

I like Brad's answer....hehehe...

frustrated with the high commissions they charge...a couple of years ago I bought 500 shares around 28 a share...I bought and sold it several times since then...making a very nice profit...

you know the old adage..."if you can't beat them...join them"...

I did real well with the stock and got out around $39...it's in the mid forties now...closing Friday at $43.99 and a 52 week high of $46.15...I wish I had not sold it...

don't know if you knew this...but Paypal is a division of Ebay...they own it and it does very well adding to their profits...

it's really still attractive at $43.99...it's PE is a low 15.42...quartely revenues are steadily climbing...and revenues are projected to increase 19% and 14% in 2011 and 2012...

if it takes a dip...maybe into the 30's...I will buy a few hundred shares again...

Hello Brad & Mike:

I enjoyed Brad's posting, ha, ha and well said!

Mike's second comments to this small thread were interesting as well. Yes, since I started selling on eBay myself in 2005 I soon gathered that PayPal is a corporation owned by eBay. Yes, I am aware that eBay has done very well over the only 15 years it has been in business. In early 2005 when I was selling toy soldier sets via a eBay Consignment seller in my area the consignment seller called eBay a "Cash Cow".

So then, no one really knows why the name "eBay" was adopted. I know that eBay's HQ is in San Jose, CA which is near San Francisco, CA. So perhaps the name relates to San Francisco "Bay" or some other bay in that area? I'll go with that until someone else comes up with something different. Thanks again for your input!!

Right you are Gary regarding the geography. eBay simply stands for / refers to "East Bay" aka San Francisco area.

Best Regards,
Marc

Dear Marc:

Ah, so I finally made a lucky guess! Thanks so much for your comment! Now I can go to bed now and not have to worry about it any more, ha, ha. But really, thanks for the information!

And it's also a sort of Internet pun, if you will, or a formulation similar to other names of things in the virtual world, "e" standing for "electronic". So, "email" (originally "e-mail", but geeks don't like hyphens), evite, etc, and then there are other products or companies that took similar names. Esurance, for example, whose volume is online and phone sales.

Prost!
