I've started to paint this figure. Trying to create a detailed pattern on the coat. Why do I put myself in the way of sheer torture?

Dear Blaster, for patern I suggest you work with a pencil, then if the pattern ( here circles and undulations, stays empty, use now an India Ink Pen and India Inks, if you wish to fill the circles, squares etc use Black Inks, when the ink is dry, it will form a sort of wall ( very thin) and you can paint another colour inside .
Here what I did 40 years ago with India Inks ( already !)

Last pictures, are simple dots ( with inks )

Like to see what you do and your very positive evolution .

Hi Vicknor and Mirof,

thanks for your inputs! What I am trying to do here is to set myself a challenge to see how difficult it is to paint intricate regular patterns. The Russian painters do unbelievable work. However, one of them shared her technique sometime back on another forum (Planet forum)- so I am hoping to learn from that.

All of them use acrylics, while I am old-school and use enamels and oils. Thanks for the pencil and india Ink ideas as well. I did consider these earlier but then decided to wing it. Errors in oils can be washed off with thinner or painted over. Another idea from figure modellers could be to use decals and/or paint over these (see my thread on the del Prado knight). Mirof, I must say that your painting technique is very good. and precise.

Mirof;

Very well done !

Some quality painting there.

Thank you for posting.

I completed the basic template and then started to fill in the noughts. A tedious version of tic tac toe.

So far, this is what I achieved.

Deciding that the colour scheme wasn't right, I've decided to go for a red robe.

I painted the robe a vermillion colour shaded with purple. Highlighted with cadmium yellow.

Painted more of this figure. Pics taken during an overcast morning and were a little dark so I had to brighten them up.
