Hi guys,

Just to let you know that I'm already working on the new elephant that I will be bringing to the Chicago show: The Elephant of Bahawalpur.

I'm sooo busy working on the sculpture and painting for the Durbar collectors, that I don't have much time for the process posts; but I have the pictures and I will show them when the elephant is released.

This is a beautiful elephant with a very entricate embroidery on the clothes, absolutely beautiful. But the main feature (in my opinion) is the maharaja. I'm focusing on him specially.

The Nawab of Bahawalpur wore a richly embroidered coat during the Main Procession, and a necklace of extremely large rubies. His was a muslim state of 15000 square miles in the north-west of india. His name was Muhammad Bahawal Khan V and became the Nawab of Bahawalpur in 1899.

I have a question, when it comes to the colors of everything. Aside from the Menepes prints where are you getting the information on colors? If it’s a secret that’s cool but I am always curious about these things.

I can’t wait to see this last elephant and his Maharaja.

Dave,

Thanks!

First of all, I look for all possible color references written, such as all the newspepaers, articles and books. There are many many color references in the descriptions. If I don't fine any, I research about the state to see if there is any contemporary reference to that piece (elephant, maharaja, palanquin, cavalry, etc). Most of the howdas are in the state museums. If there's nothing there I begin to compare b&w photos of other states that I do have color references. I know for sure that yellow and red photograph as black, for example. If I don't find ANYTHING, I search for the state color to see if I can get a match there.

It takes time, but it's worth it :)

Those look great Ana! The Maharaja is especially wonderful, you really captured his likeness!
Thanks sharing them with us.

Agree with Dave. A wonderful elephant and the handlers etc. dress him up nicely.
