I've completed the figure to this stage and the pose and drapery looks about right. I haven't yet thought of a suitable knight to paint the heraldry.

Added the pommel of the high saddle from plasticard. I adjusted the knight and resculpted the skirts to fit on the saddle.

These older EMI kits look very good. Hence a couple of pics to show off their quality. I added a shield from Pegaso spares.

After some refinement, the figure was undercoated in enamels. I have decided to paint the figure as Alymer de Valence, with blue white stripes. The helm will be added later to the right hand.

The blue lines are lightly brushed on to indicate the positioning of the lines. I noticed a flaw in the neck on the horse and stopped painting to resculpt over that defect.

I checked the details of the heraldry to confirm the number of bands for the shield and surcoat.

Aymer had 5 white and 5 blue bands across on his shield.

The number of bands on his surcoat is based on this reference to his tomb, about 10 blue bands in total. However, the base for this surcoat appears to be painted yellow. I decided to stick to white/blue banding for his surcoat.

Also watched the movie "The Bruce" which featured Aymer de Valence at the battle of Bannockburn for inspiration. Starting to paint the figure in oils.

And guess what? I was never happy with the length of the legs. The fig appears to perch on top of the horse. Also the drapery of the surcoat looks stiff when compared to the horse trappings. So without much ado, I removed the surcoat and lengthened the legs. Knights tended to ride straight-legged
