Hey all,

Thought I would share for those that don't mind the odd computer game.

The 'Total War' series which has had titles in the past of 'Shogun' and 'Rome' has just released 'Empire', I bought this the other day and have had a ball playing it.

Time period is 1700-1800 (generally) There is a campaign mode where the player undertakes George Washingtons 'Road to Independence'.

The battles are where all the fun is at - command units such as the Coldstream Guards, Chassuers a Pied, Various sharpshooter/skirimishing regiments, etc.

Also some great fun to be had in real-time naval battles - the player can recreate some of the great man-o-war battles of the past centuries.

I love this series:cool:. I didn't realize the new "Empire" edition was out, thanks for the heads up. Is the Naval action as good as advertised?

I had the Rome game but never played it.I'm into the 18th cen. now and I may have to get this. Thanks for the info.

Overall, I would add that this is a great game. I have been a fan of the Total War series ever since the Rome release. After waiting for Empire for about a year, it has finally come. I do like the new storyline campaign option with the Road to Independence. It is a little more managable than the grand campaign, which can have too much to keep track of, in my opinion.

The gameplay is very similar to previous releases, however, there are a couple of new items. Your units can take cover behind walls, though this seems to have a slight bug and doesn't always work correctly.

The naval battles are great, but it does have a small learning curve to get the basics of naval movement down. Sometimes, I have found that I forget to take into account the wind direction when manuvering in the heat of battle!

Though there are minor issues with some details, it is a great game to get new people interested in the period. While the collectors here will notice when certain uniform details are not exactly right, the designers did a good job in capturing the flavor of combat from that time.

I'm terrible at Naval combat!!! But it is a lot of fun all the same!

It looks good. I have from time to time dabbled with the Roman version and now have some PC issues with the program. This may motivate me to get them fixed.

Great series - always anticipated on my part. I started back with TW Shogun (I hope they revisit this as they did the Medieval era) and have eagerly awaited Empire. So far, I absolutely stink but the great thing about this game is that it has legs and is playable for a long, long time without even considering the expansion that will come out eventually.

I'm drooling at the thought of an expansion pack that allows another 100 or so years...

Peninsula Wars + Waterloo, etc.
Bolshevik (*sp) conflict
Crimea
Zulu Wars
Sudan
Maori Wars
Boer Wars

mmmm!

I also love the total war series. I must admit I have been a bit cheap and have been waiting for the "gold" editions to come out after a year or so. 18th century is my favourite historical period so I may be tempted to get this earlier. Can one play as the British in the War of Independence scenario?

Not in the Independence scenario, however you can play as the Brits in the "main campagin" inwhich the 13 colonies have been established and you have the option of getting that 'hard earned' tax back :p
