Sorry for a shameless plug for my favorite publisher but they've published many great books with a WW I theme and they're now having a sale on these titles.

See Europe and the Great War

NYRB Classics specializes in issuing publishing books that have gone out of print. I have read almost all these titles and strongly recommend them, particularly Schlump, a fine book, from the German perspective.

Schlump and Beware of Pity sound excellent, some great reviews out there.

Rob,

I read Schlump a few months ago. His description of War in the trenches is jaw dropping. I can't imagine how anyone lived through that.

Beware of Pity is tangentially about the War. However, it is a fine, fine book. Zweig's only full length novel.
