Ever lose a toy soldier and a box storage question? (1 Viewer)

For the last 8 months, I have been unable to locate 2 different toy soldiers. I searched and searched and searched. No luck. I probably purchased the figures 5 or more years ago and I had never displayed these figures before, but wanted to now. I located the boxes for the figures, but as I know I bought those boxes as "used" sets, there was a good chance they were purchased as "partial" sets. I resorted and catalogued nearly every "box" in the collection, but again no luck. Eventually, I became convinced that I somehow missed collecting these two now long retired figures.

Then miracle of miracles, they re-appeared in a little used, tiny kitchen cabinet behind some very old and rarely used spices. Obviously, I placed them there several years ago, but I have no memory whatsoever of doing it. Yankees are down 2 -0 to the Astros as I type, but I am so pleased with myself at the moment that I had to tell someone --- you guys. Now for the more pressing issue.

Where do people store their empty boxes and their un-displayed sets? I am hesitant to place the empty boxes in the garage or the basement, but the temptation to reclaim a room now dedicated to "box" storage is gaining distinct momentum. Have people had mold and humidity problems? I have been leaning towards the unfinished basement (cinderblock), as I run a dehumidifier year-round and the winter and summer temperatures are more moderate compared to the garage. But I still have distinct reservations.

Right now, I am storing the "empty" boxes in large plastic storage bins, bins numbered and referenced to my excel listing, but I really want to free up that room. My gut is telling me that the square footage occupied by the boxes is several times the square footage of the actual display space for the figures. It seems to me that I have now become a box collector.

Any insights would be most helpful. Thanks

I use a shelf at the top of a closet,When I run out of space up there I will use the rest of the closet as I don't use it for anything at the moment.

I use every closet upstairs and I'm running out of room...

would your attic work?

Ken...

perhaps those little figures come to life at night when you're asleep...^&grin

I have a 3 car garage that is dry all year around and store them in large bins (from Costco). I don't have any un-displayed set yet (I have only 400 figurines and they all fit in my curio cabinets :wink2:)

Since we move a ton I have picked up a couple of foot lockers and plastic bin that are used to store and transport the collection or the boxes when I do get them displayed. Right now I have most of them in storage mode. The foot lockers are black and brass and usually have a tray in them that can be used to store loose figures wrapped in bubbles and tissue. They used to be available at places like Walmart and since they are rectangles and sturdy they can be stacked where ever you store things.

I store mine in the combustion fire box, never seems to run out of storage space.^&grin, Robin.

Robin,

So your solution is to avoid the problem entirely by burning/discarding the boxes? Or am I missing something here? The idea of getting rid of the boxes is both SCARY and BRILLIANT !!! And since my will already stipulates that I am being buried with my Jenkins Monongahela Marching Sets (plus the Wagons), it is beginning to sound like a viable idea.

So to paraphrase: Boxes!!! We ain't got no boxes! We don't need no boxes! I don't have to show you any stinking boxes!!!

Both questions are good.

I have lost figures temporarily, in that I forgot where I put them. Eventually, I found them, by searching from top to bottom.

As far as the boxes go, I wouldn't discard them, either. As I'm remodeling the house and dedicating one room for my collection, I'm planning box storage into the designs.

If the value of your collection is a concern, you want to keep the original boxes, too.

Prost!

I have all the boxes in larger cardboard boxes. each larger box is numbered and i have a spread sheet saying which storage box each toy soldier box is in. It's a pain to do, but comes in handy, for sure, later on

you're so organized...

I have built a cardboard house that I use as a guest room...

it's very sturdy...^&grin

I store mine in the attic. Been doing it for years, no apparent damage as I have had to retrieve boxes when I sold some items. But mine are not organized in any manner. It is a true cluster when I need to find a box. Unless it is for a few hundred dollars I won't even attempt to find the box.

Interesting thread!
! have scores of boxes and keep them in plastic containers in my boarded out attic........however, I started to get lazy and began storing them in the space behind my books in the several bookcases in my dinning room. I keep the books pulled forward , and find there is plenty of space behind to accommodate "lot's" of boxes.
