I just ordered the f4u-1d Hedrick plane from Aikens. It looks great, but I have a couple of questions. Firstly, how much of the engine can one see? I read that some of it is viewable through the cowl, but I presume one cannot remove the cowl to see the whole engine. Secondly, I read in another blog that the propeller used on the Jenkins plane is the one found on a f4u-1a, a Hamilton 6501 rather than the correct Hamilton 6541a-0. Can anyone verify this? The difference seems to be the thickness of the blade near the shaft. The 6501 has a thin stalk, while the 6541 is much thicker. Using my less than stellar eyes, it looks like a 6501 to me.

The radial engine appears to be a standalone assembly, rather than one molded into the engine cowling. The cowl flaps are open and some “plumbing” is visible if you look through the gap. The blog was correct in regard to the prop. The -1D should have a wide-chord, “butter paddle prop.” I don’t know for certain, but the error may have come about when Jenkins was sorting out differences between the 1A and 1D, the two being so similar.

Question for you...

Can you link us to the blog? I’d love to read what someone else thinks of the model.

Thanks Robert,

I can’t say that I disagree with some aspects of the gentlemen’s criticism. However, I always try to keep an eye on where Jenkins is headed with these VERY limited production efforts. I really suspect that there’ll be additional Corsairs in the pipeline, F4U-1A for the USN/USMC, or perhaps models for the FAA or RNZAF. Is that fact or idle speculation? Well, that’s just the way he’s done things in the past, and each model tends to include detail that makes it unique, items that extend beyond simple paint work. I don’t KNOW that’s where we’re headed, but it’s absolutely the pattern that I’ve observed since I started collecting his models. As to which prop belongs on which example, it’ll all get straightened out. Stay tuned. The models will only get better.
