I thought I would start a thread on sculpting faces. I have a lot of grey army and the same faces keep starring back at me. Airfix, Historex, Preiser - you name it. I thought that it would be quite fun to actually sculpt your own faces.

I started off with spare bodies and filed the faces off. Then I create a Lord Voldemort face with putty. Gently indent two eyeholes, pick up the nose and then the lips. Shape the cheeks and there's your face. Just practise.

you say it fast...
and it sounds easy...^&grin

but you're very talented at this...
I don't think I could do anything like this......

Hi Mike,

Surprisingly, its not that hard. I did each face in about 10 minutes. Anyway, if you look at the faces, they are OK only and can be further improved - Which is the point of this thread. I hope to share more insight on how I sculpt faces.

Four more faces, all feminine.

Generally the faces should be symmetrical. Details are a little soft so I will have to refine and correct some areas.

The blown up pics show the flaws clearly. Generally, the nose bridges are too broad. The noses have to be straightened. These faces have an elven look to them. Will need to build up the chin areas. The eyes will have to be added. There is a tendency to sculpt larger but the broad outlines of the heads delineate the scale limits.

I have a lot of these spare failed castings. Experimenting on them is good practice.

Here is a selection of further work on these faces. The noses was rescupted and foreheads were added. Eyes were added. these are the hardest to sculpt. In some cases, I reuse the original eyes from the castings.
Generally, I find that the best faces are those that have the eye sockets, cheeks and lips defined in one session.

Here's a couple of faces that I think would be suitable for specific projects.
