False Front store 1/32 scale... (1 Viewer)

..a work in progress. A BMC Mead's HQ conversion inspired by the recent 1/72 scale houses one man did.

Warning. Don't do this the way I did. Plan it out first. Measure everything and know what you're doing with a hot glue gun.

I'll post more when I finish painting and put up the sign.

Good idea on the building Scott. I think it will look fine when finished. I like the way you added a store type front to the building.

You can still see similar buildings where I live on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. The parishes had their own stores until more people had cars and went into "town" to the larger markets. Now they are homes. I've seen some photos of these false fronts added to tents "out west." The front is "board and batten." The battens cover the gaps between the boards. Here's a photo of the "Sutler Row" of these types of buildings. I suppose one could make a row of just fronts for a display background.

I think your idea to make a long row of storefronts would work nicely, you should try that, next.

What is the white sheet material that you used for the sides of the building? Is that a paperboard or foam stock, or is it sheet styrene? Similar question for the shingle sheet for the roof.

I'm sorry, it's a BMC Meade's Head Quarters Building. I've bought about 7 so far and I just toss the horrible BMC figures that come with it. Filling the snap-together holes and pegs are my next step.

I was just given a big scape piece of pink insulation Styrofoam from a building site and a large block of Styrofoam washed up on the local beach. They might become part of the redoubt on Breed's Hill.

When I can, I'd like to get a small table saw to cut with more precision. X-acto knives and saws, plus a hand held adjustable square are not great for bigger or more crisp models.

Great job Scott! Glad I could be of some inspiration. I'm still working on 1/72 scale bldgs. Using your Chattanooga picture, I made another store of the center door two window design as you have here. I also have a barn and a church in process right now. Looking forward to seeing your next construction job. I'll post more pictures when I can have a small village built.

Check MicroMark, they have some miniature woodworking tools in their catalog, including table saws, band saws and lathes. They might have what you're looking for.

Of course, the miniature tools can cost as much as the full-size ones
