I was going through my book collection over the weekend (another beautiful Summer weekend of cool temperatures, rain, wind and did I mention rain.....) and have come up with a list of my top ten books that focus primary on military artwork.

Would love to hear from forum members on this to see if there are any books out there I do not have that are worth adding to the collection..........

10.) The Age of Napoleon by Rocco. He has done some brilliant Napoleonic subjects, he autographed my copy and I know Keith from the show circuit (one of the perks of doing shows is meeting individuals such as Keith Rocco).

9.) The Soldiers View by Rocco. Another of his works, this one focuses on the American Civil War.

8.) Portraits of Combat by Dietz. His main focus is aircraft, but he has done quite a few WWII battle scenes as well, great stuff.

7.) American Battles by Troiani. Main focus is American Civil War; Don is the master of the ACW painting.

6.) Waterloo by Lachouque; THE definative work on the battle (Waterloo Companion not withstanding), has some incredible art work including the Waterloo Panarama of the doomed French Cavalry charge, the first wave that began their attack around 4:20 pm.

5.) Borodino; this is a Russian book published on the 175th anniversary of the battle, has some very rare paintings as well as the Borodino Panorama.

4.) Napoleons War in Spain by Lachouque and Tranie; contains many terrific pieces of art on this subject, also includes a number of pages of uniform plates.

3.) La Campagne de Russie; Napoleon 1812 by Tranie. Another terrific book on the subject of the invasion of Russia by Napoleon with a focus on Borodino and the heroic actions of Ney as commander of the French rear guard, beautifully illustrated.

2.) Napoleon 1813; la campagne d'allemagne by Tranie. Focus on Leipzig and the battles fought during the German campaign; another brilliantly illustrated subject.

1.) My number one all time favorite is......Napoleon; 1814 la campagne de France by Tranie. My favorite subject of the Napoleonic war (aside from Waterloo) as Napoleon did some of his best work as a general in this campaign IMO vs the Russian, Prussian, Austrian, Bavarian, Wurtemberg and British armies.

You cannot go wrong with any of these books. The Tranie books are top shelf, first rate books, all have French text, not a big issue as I have an ok grasp of the language, but don't worry if you don't as the artwork is incredible. The Russian book on Borodino book is nearly impossible to find.

The Tranie books are all out of print and command a hefty price tag. There are also three other books he wrote about the Austrian Campaign, the 1805 Campaign and the 1806/07 campaign, which command price tags north of 200.00, 400.00 and 500.00 US respectively.

Also, I've got two new books on the way that are four star works as well; Napoleon en 1814; la campagne de france by Koch and Napoleon en allemagne; la campagne de 1813 by clement................

Wow George, you must really have a nice library of military books!

Thanks John; nothing I like doing better than sitting down with a cup of joe late at night and flipping through some of my books to admire the artwork, a simple pleasure in life really, I find it very relaxing...........

I can fully understand that, my current problem is where to put them so I can find them again! I have no more room in my current den, I hope the next one is large enough to allow me to have a small library section.

Where do you keep yours?

John,
Above the master bedroom, I've got a loft with a skylight were my computer is and along either wall, Iv'e got bookcases filled with books. I usually grab a comple of books per night and go downstairs to the tv room and crack open the books and lay them across the coffee table in front of the sectional couch.

I especially love do so from around November 27th through mid January and read by the light of our Christmas tree, talk about happy times.................

It sounds like you have a great setup. My problem is right now I have them

scatted about the house on various bookshelves and I really don't know

where most of them are once I am done reading them.

I would say your system is much better!:)

It took me four years of scattering them all around the house before I (read; my girlfriend) came up with the bookcase idea, I'm (she's) one smart person...............

Further books with great artwork.

British Army Uniforms in Colour--- Artwork by Harry Payne, Ibbotson and Holloway

Seems like a great list George. Inspired by Bob's great epic here, I got Don Troiani's Civil War and I love it, even though I have no figure collection interest in the ACW. It sounds like I need to see if I can find some of those on your list.;):D

I have one of the Copernic books (Detaille) and it is gorgeous. I would add to the list Lachouque's "The Anatomy Of Glory". An essential study of Napoleon's Old Guard and fantastically illustrated with over 170 plates, many in color. Great book. -- lancer

I am taking a different tack. I really enjoyed this series on PBS this last winter and the book is absolutely my favorite art related book. Whilst it has nothing to do with war art, it is a tremendous history of some of the great art in Europe. My favorite book focusing on artwork book is Simon Schama's Power of Art. Schama has a unique ability to bring history to focus with the personalities and events related to them and the impact they (the works of art) have had on history and how history impacted their creation. A very good art history read, and some great pictures too.

I have some of them (the Troiani books on the civil war and american revolution,Echos of Glory and others ) , i like the Osprey series but choosing my favourites i'd say "With Napoleon in Russia The Illustrated Memoirs of Faber Du Faur, 1812" by Greenhill (it's difficult not to be moved by some of the plates portraying the retreat) and "Napoleon's Army in Russia: The Illustrated Memoirs of Albrecht Adam, 1812" by Pen & Sword..2 beautiful books about one of the most doomed and tragic enterprises of military history, i strongly reccomend them. Also a mention for "Wellington's Army" with plates by Hamilton Smith..really informing and it' s a big size book!

Hi Guys,

I am a self-confessed “bookaholic” especially of military art and paintings.

Like my good friend Ken Osen I have the French books by COPERNIC on the 3 French “masters of military painting…”

De Neuville
Detaille and…
Meissonier

Another favourite is “L’Armee Francaisse” by Detaille… superb!

I am also a big fan of Lucien Rousselot and have several books by him as well as 4 original paintings. K&C featured Rousselot’s Dragoon on the cover of our latest Napoleonic catalogue.

I wish there were books on some of the other great military artists such as Lady Butler… Richard Caton-Woodville… Robert Gibb and George Scott to name but a few.

Oh well enjoy…

Best wishes and happy reading!

I've got "L'Armee Francaisse," it is a brilliant book. Also recently picked up the book by Robichon on Detaille, his artwork is among my favorite, specifically his Franco Prussian paintings...........
