I am a great fan of historical fiction, from many periods, Roman, Saxons, Vikings, the Crusades, Napoleonic and WW2.
I read around 20 histrical fiction writers which include,
Roman - Fabbri, Scarrow, Riches, Goldworthy,
Saxon/Viking - Scarrow, Low, Kristian, Cornwell,
Cruades - Guillou, Whyte, Harper, Young
Napoleonic - Cornwell, Goldworthy, Connery, Gale, Forester, Scarrow, Kent, Stockwin.
WW2 - Gale, Asher, Reeman, Holland

I know there are no US periods above and i have over 50 L'Amour and Gilman [great escapism], plus have read some Shaara. Nelson. J and others.

Which historical writer, character, series is a favourite of yours?

RW Peake - Titus Pullus, his descendants and Diocles and his descendants (if you like the Aubrey/Maturin dynamic from POB you will like this), plus I love his depictions of Julius Caesar and Germanicus
Christian Cameron - Arimnestos of Plataea and William Gold
Patrick O'Brien - Stephen Maturin and Jack Aubrey
Robert Fabbri's Vespasian
Helena Schrader's Balian d'Ibelin and his scions
Glyn Ilyffe's Odysseus
Colleen McCollough's Rome Series
J K Swift's Hospitaller Saga - Brother Foulques de Villaret who saves the Order after the fall Acre
Nigel Tranter's Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. I love how you read the story from very different view points when you read each of his stories of these men. I think it is fantastic to read the same scenes from Bruce's noble point of view after reading it from Wallace's more common or minor nobility point of view

Honorable Mentions:
William Kelso's Soldier of Rome (I like that his initial characters are not that heroic, but then become heroes. Plus, I like his focus on the Batavians)
Seamus O'Griffin's Gallowglass series (especially as it has to do with my mother's clan, the MacDonalds)

My favorite historical fiction writer is Sharon Kay Penman

She wrote a few shorter mysteries that I didn’t love, but her main works are amazing.

If looking for a taste and want to read just one, Sunne in Splendour is my favorite
