Fire departments like the military have patches for different units , frequently using cartoon characters as symbols or mascots. These are from Ladder 2 home of Treefrog's own Firebat who is a chief there. A very busy house that tragically lost members resonding to the WTC on 9/11.

B.P. on the Snoopy patch stands for the late Bill Patchett a firefighter in Syracuse,NY and a friend of mine who designed patches for fire departments all over the US. Bill and I did an exhibit at the New York State Fair called "The Art of The Firefighter"

Randy, do you have any more to show us? I would like to see some more.

Somewhere I believe I have a collection of these on slides that I shot when I did the exhibit with Bill Patchett. I'll see if I can find them and scan them in and post them. it may be a while but I'll let you know.

The characters used on patches also appear on the rigs. Here is the Tasmanian Devil holding the jaws of life on a truck somewhere in PA. They are like the art work on the noses of airplanes in WWII.

Very nice Randy, something a little different, a nice thread devoted to some of our finest.

I love it Taz with the jaws of life. My moms' uncle Mike was a grand man and a captain in SFFD.:)

Randy . . . Are you on the job? My son's a BC here in San Diego . . . was at the WTC with the SD USAR team. Also have a good friend who was with 2 Truck . . . fortunately he retired some time ago. His son was at WTC and survived. If you're ever in SD make sure you visit the Firhouse Museum at 1572 Columbia St . . . I stodf floor watches there for ten yrs and met some of the finest people in the world. Each had a story . . . some of which were true!

No--just a buff. When I lived in Syracuse I was doing research on WWII aircraft nose art and found out from a colleague married to a Lt. in Rescue 1 that the same kind of pop culture 'character' art was being done on patches and rigs and so I got to know Bill Patchett who was responsible for their designs. I visited many stations in Syracuse and Onondaga County and put together an exhibit for the NY State Fair. I also wrote an article for The Visiting Firemen.

Thanks for the tip on the SD fire museum. We have a son in Irvine and next time we are out that way will check it out.

My middle son is to firefighter material like I am to Sherman tanks. He is on the local volunteer department and is an officer for the department. Every now and then he shows me some of the photos etc. Firefighters are a proud bunch (VERY justifiably!) and their unit insignia for different trucks, houses, etc are really fascinating to see. They really rival WW2 nose art with their patches, t-shirts, or on their rigs.
