Normandy landings to clear mines and then to clear minefields inland. The chains would spin, striking the ground well in front of the tank detonating the mines and clearing a tank wide path through the minefield. I don't think there were any in North Afrika or even in Italy until later in the war. But the first flail tanks were used in North Afrika - they were Matilda Scorpions. The flail was run by a separate Ford engine mounted in a metal box attached to the side of the tank. The flail operator sat in this box with the engine (lucky him) - but I suppose that was still better than being outside the box.
