Felony is an Australian production produced by Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty and Ramses in upcoming Exodus movie).
Edgerton is a Sydney Detective who, after drinks with his team, drives home after having a few too many. He hits a boy on a bycycle causing serious injury. He reports the injury but not his involvement.
Tom Wilkinson and Jai Courtney (Willis's son in most recent Die Hard and was also in Jack Reacher) are two Detectives who attend the scene as they are in the area. Wilkinson is the old hand Det Sgt who knows Edgerton and wants to help whereas Courtney is the new arrival and senses something is not right. Melissa George is Edgerton's wife.
The movie centres on the cover up and its consequences for various characters and how they handle it.
It is a slow paced movie without the normal cops and robbers type action. A couple of investigations are going on in the background but they are not significant plot lines. The story mainly concentrates on the issues between the three Detectives and also some aspects from Edgertons wife and the mother of the injured boy. Wilkinson puts in a very good performance.
I knew it was more of a "talking" type movie than an action movie and those expecting the usual police drama movie with car chases will probably be disappointed. I found the storyline interesting and how the characters handled it seemed pretty realistic to me. For example do you put your career on the line to help out a mate (something you have to decide almost immeadiately) or do you go against your senior officer and demand the truth come out ? In the context of police then obviously it is a bit more complicated with some serious consequences for all concerned.
Overall I enjoyed it. Unfortunately it has limited mass market appeal and the two major cinema chains in Brisbane are not showing it and also read similar situation elsewhere. It might not be in the cinemas for long so if you do decide you want to watch it in the cinema you will have to be quick. If you dont see it in cinema then hopefully you will know what to expect if see it on a cable/TV schedule.
