Summary and Daily Mail article below.

This is a fascinating case and long overdue. Good work by the FBI.

However the arrested are mainly from South American football associations. Speculated that today's arrests of FIFA officials came as a result of evidence provided by former FIFA executive turned alleged FBI informant Chuck Blazer who may have been working for FBI for a number of years.

The most senior arrested was Jeffrey Webb FIFA vice-president and president of CONCACAF. The 50-year-old was born and lives in the Cayman Islands and is the Cayman Islands Football Association president. Previously been hailed by Sepp Blatter as the potential successor to the position of FIFA president.

How does the head of the Cayman Islands Football even become a possible head of FIFA ?

Even somebody not normally following soccer would have wondered how Quatar could be a suitable venue for the World Cup bearing in mind the heat and unsuitability for fans etc.

Seven top FIFA executives arrested in Zurich hotel raid after FBI corruption probe: Football chiefs accused of taking £100m in bribes... and now police are investigating how Russia and Qatar won World Cup bids.

Senior officials arrested at five-star hotel in Zurich ahead of FIFA Congress

Face allegations of bribery totalling more than £100m over past 25 years

U.S. officials claim they were involved in 'rampant, deep-rooted corruption'

Officials could be extradited to the U.S to face the charges, reports say

FIFA chief Sepp Blatter 'lobbying to postpone Friday's presidential vote'

Swiss police to question 10 FIFA bosses who took part in World Cup votes

The Swiss Federal Office of Justice have opened criminal proceedings in connection with the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups on allegations of 'criminal mismanagement and money laundering.'

In a separate probe, the FBI will question those allegedly involved in bribes 'totalling more than $150m (£97.4m)' linked to commercial deals dating back to the 1990s for football tournaments in the United States and Latin America.

The United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the 'indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic and deep-rooted both abroad and in the US.'

FBI director James B. Comey said that 'undisclosed and illegal payments, kickbacks and bribes became a way of doing business at FIFA.'
Fourteen people have been charged by the United States Department of Justice, including nine FIFA officials, as questioning by Swiss authorities began immediately.

FIFA corrupt? Say it ain't so.:rolleyes2: Worst kept secret, ever! Wonder what made them suspicious? Could it be the awarding of the WC games to Qatar, a desert country where it is 150 F in the shade, has no infrastructure, and no history of participation in WC soccer? Nah. Must have been something else. -- Al

Too bad they didn't get Blatter.

I think it's terrible that the WC was awarded to Qatar. What FIFA is doing now is changing the WC from the Summer to the Winter, when the temperatures won't be as hot. However, this will play havoc with league schedules and finances. It was a stupid idea.

The presidential elections are this week and Blatter is what is wrong with FIFA. He must go, but probably won't.

It's not corruption if you are a FIFA official. It's just a perk of the job. {sm3}

But the games should be moved from Qatar and Russia should lose the following World Cup.

Brad,

I couldn’t said it better myself! I agree with every word of yours… Just like to add that albeit its mammoth size, this has the potential to be an even major scandal down here, since the former head of the Brazilian Football Association was among the arrested today and the indictment includes Nike’s sponsorship of the Brazilian team, as well as ticket sales and TV transmission rights for last year’s World Cup.

That's pretty bad Carlos. I think the sport, globally, is being ruined by money. Forget FIFA for a second but most teams are in financial trouble. In the Spanish La Liga, for example, very few teams make any money, mostly Barca and Real, but the others have to try to keep up and La Liga is awash in red ink.

It's killing the game.

Brad

four of the FIFA people charged have plead guilty to the US charges and have given up millions of dollars in bribe money. Looks like they made deals for info. Sepp may be charged yet.

I am amazed that it took this long for someone to nail the bums. I wonder how this will change things for the sport. I guess time will tell.

Talk about your poor second cousins, while watching the news about the arrests this afternoon, the announcer mentioned the Women's World Cup starts in 10 days. Someone has done a poor advertising job as this is the first I have even heard it mentioned. -- Al

On the Women's World Cup, I would totally agree. We saw the US team during their training session prior to the last World Cup matches in Germany. They play very well and should get much more press, especially since the US Women tend to win more games than our men. Looking forward to seeing their matches on TV at least here in Europe they will be on the TV.

Corruption in soccer?

Gee, never saw that one coming...............:rolleyes2:

BREAKING: Swiss Police confirm that, when arrested, all the FIFA officials threw themselves on the ground and pretended to be injured.

And now Blatter has gone .... be interesting to see what else will come out

Thank goodness.

Now, maybe they can undo Qatar and maybe give it to the US; we are waiting!

I don't know if there is time to undo Russia; that thug Putin would have a fit!

LOL. That's a good one. I never watch soccer unless it is on in a bar and I can't avoid making eye contact with the giant TV screen which mercifully only happens in the US during the World Cup. I haven't seen guys flop like that since the Three Stooges retired. They hit the ground every few minutes like JFK in the Zapruder film. Wallow around in feigned agony while the offender rubs his hands thru his hair and appears indignant while pleading his case. It's laughable.

Your posts really should come with a warning; "Do not drink any sort of beverage while reading"................watching soccer in the US is an acquired taste.........................and if one more talking head bozo on TV claims someday soccer is going to catch on and pass one of the big four sports in popularity in the US, I'm going to scream.

When I hear names like Figo, Maradona, Klinsman etc I automatically know what they contributed to football and have respect for that. I still want to know what Blatter, Blazer and Warner and their ilk ever did for football. Did they play for the Mandene Park Under 11 B team or perhaps coach the local church invitation side at some point. I mean do you need any qualifications to become a sports administrator. Glad Blatter has gone
