I guess you really need to trace back your family tree and see where it leads (could even find a link back to the Hessians of the AWI)!
In the UK we have access to census's that I think go back until about 1841.
In that you can find lots of personal infomation about your ancestors and what their occupations were etc.
I would have thought it would be fairly easy to go back to the 1940's online as that's only a couple of generations back and then once you can get an idea of your ancestors names you could try and find a website similar to this for German troops.
