My first Chicago show is two weeks away, and I have to say I haven't been this excited in awhile! Flying in from Maine on Thursday and leaving the Monday after the show. Looking forward to Seeing George from Minuteman and his side kick Larry (a fellow Mainer) as well as Nick and DeAnna from TSSD and Matt from Hobby Bunker. Any advice for this "Chicago Virgin"?

Thanks!

Travis

Decide in advance how much you want to spend and stick to it because it's easy to go beyond that.

Also, a big part of the Show is meeting and having fun with fellow collectors so don't forget about that.

It's my first as well and really looking forward to it!

Decide in advance how much you want to spend IN GEORGE'S ROOM and DON'T stick to it because it's easy to go beyond that.

Also, a big part of the Show is meeting and having fun with fellow collectors; ie, GETTING OVERSERVED AT THE BAR, so don't forget about that.

Fixed it for you................:wink2:

HEY Travis and you to ZAK ....REALLY glad that you guys are going to be able to make it to the show. Pack light so there will be plenty of space to store all the treasures you find.
George and I will be arriving on Tuesday, about noon or so and then starting the "SETUP". Looking forward to having you stop by the rooms and the booth on Sunday.

PS: Travis, How is the hand / wrist?

Oh ya' advise .... be sure to get a OTSN floor map of the hotel and the list of vendors in each room. It will help you plan your travels around the 4 sections on each floor and the two floors.

Fixed it further for you ^&grin

Hey Larry!

The hand feels great! Went back to work on July 1st. Looking forward to seeing you Ina couple of weeks. Llanos saw that the Chicago Fire Museum is having an open house that Saturday! Toy soldiers and fire trucks! Doesn't get much better than that!

This time, in two weeks from today, I will be done with my first round of the two room trading floors.
Man, I am so looking forward to it :smile2:
AND GEORGE PICKING UP THE TAB, that's soo cool :wink2: ^&grin

Just imagine in less than 2 weeks you will no longer be a 'Virgin' and instead have a heap of happy memories, half your luck. ^&grin, Robin.

Travis, I think you said you would have a car. Don't eat at the hotel you won't have any money left for soldiers but you absolutely must eat at a Portillos. There are 2 a short distance from the Hyatt. I was turned on to them by John (Leadman) a few years ago. Now I stop there even before I hit the Hyatt.
As was stated get a room map. And by all means if you go into a room see something you may want, but say I'll come back later. "RIGHT THE ROOM # DOWN" you'll never find the room again if you don't.
Gary

Gary is absolutely correct :wink2:
It might sound weird to a newcomer, but when roaming the rooms, most likely any Toy Soldier enthusiast will get overwhelmed by what's on display and offered.
Then, of course, most of us don't want to jump on the first attractive set they see, because there are so many more rooms to check.
You have to carry a little notebook and write down room number, set you saw, price, etc.
Because only minutes later you will see so many more, and you will lose track.
The confusing design of the floor layouts doesn't really help to return to previously seen rooms ^&grin
I walked a whole lot of hallways for nothing at previous shows, just to get back to the one room I wanted to visit again.

But the main thing is, and that's what makes the Chicago Show so extremely attractive.
For 3 or 4 days, it's nothing but Toy Soldiers :smile2:
Collectors, Manufacturers, Dealers, they are all there. You walk the hallways and people are talking Toy Soldiers.
You meet at the bar at night and all people (or most of them on this weekend) are involved with Toy Soldiers in some way.

When you're a collector, who every now and then gets a friendly "Okay" from your friends when talking about the Hobby, or a kind "Alright" from your wife when a new package came in, because in the area you are living, there is just no one around who has anything to do with Toy Soldiers, then you will find the Chicago experience quite unique :wink2: ^&grin
It's a one of a kind, no kidding.

Cheers!

On the day of the show, you can buy what they call an early bird for around $15 or $20. It allows you to get in while dealers are setting up and you can avoid the crowd. I do it.

A map is essential so you can check off the rooms you've been to. However, if you see something you want, I don't recommend walking away and coming back for it later because it might be gone.

BRAD is so right on "Buying it when you see it". I have been on both sides of the fence on this.

George and I have had guys coming into our rooms and really want a set, but figure since it is so early in the show they will hunt around first. They come back later and it has been sold .... a very depressing feeling when you had it in your hand but let it slip away.

Stupidly, I didn't take my own advise and once I ... "had to think about a set" ... before snatching it up. It was only 20 - 25 minutes later but it was GONE ..{sm2}. Learned my lesson the hard way.

Looking forward seeing everyone in a few weeks.
