Hello everyone:

Trying to make a diorama for the first time and wondering if anyone has suggestions on what time of foam board to use and where to get it. Should I even use foam board as the base? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day

I like the foam sheets made by Woodland Scenics. They are available in 1/4, 1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch thick and should be stocked by any shop that has trains.

This is a sheet I sprayed 3 colors just to see how it would take the paint. The stuff is very dense so it will not fall apart as does the type of foam used in packaging.

Generic pink foam, as used in the construction industry is very forgiving, easy to use and gives great results. Going for something with a reasonable density helps. Attached are a couple of pieces I'm playing with at the moment, 1" and 3" thickness.

And digging myself a trench network in the 3".

I'm new to mucking around with the stuff as well, but it's difficult to go too wrong on it.

Pink or blue either will work. Hobby shops sell it for a lot more than Home Despicable.

I recommended it too. Use the pink/blue foam stuff and you could make stuff like this.

Debrito,
That is quite simply one STUNNING link. I'm going to come back to it later. Wish I could get my hands on some of that foam - I've heard other guys on the forum discussing it as well. The results you can get with it just blow me away.

Cheers
H

They have also a very good stock of great tools for the FOAM. I posted some old pics on that site.
