New book reviewed in the Washington Post this AM, 'African Kaiser: General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and the Great War in Africa, 1914-1918', by Robert Gaudi. Published by Caliber @ $29 and is 436 pages, it is a very favorable review of one of Germany's biggest WW1 heroes. This is going on my list because such works on this campaign are not plentiful and works on von Lettow-Vorbeck even rarer. -- Al

That looks like a good one. Here is the Wash Post link:

I'm reading it now. I can't help but wonder what John Jenkins could do with a WWI Africa line. A lot af great possibilities there!
Just got into it myself this AM. A wide variety of troops that could be done, for sure. ^&cool -- Al

I'm reading this now but I don't find it particularly well written; too many cliches, for instance. In the hands of a specialist in the field, it could have been a lot better.

I agree, Brad. Thought it useful for someone like me with minimal knowledge of the campaign, but there were some odd analogies and a lack of detail that tended to mash the actions together. My biggest problem was following the action in terms of geography as the campaign moved all over and lost me, on occasion. Not sorry I read it, but I was disappointed in the overall picture it presented. -- Al

I may have been a bit too critical on this book. Yes, it has some problems such as geography, as Al notes; some maps (and better maps where he has maps) would have helped; I find myself going to the internet to see where a certain place is. Notwithstanding, I'm starting to enjoy it and finding it interesting.

I didn't know this until I started looking but Beau Geste has made several sets for for Germans in Southwest Africa and Southeast Africa. The below ones are for SEA.

I finally finished reading the book and I think it was well worth the time. I found the Epilogy disturbing, not because of the author's writing, but because of the fate of the Askari Memorial in Hamburg due to revisionist views of his role in WW I in Africa. I'm sure the Askaris who fought with him would disagree.
