Hi all,

I received the British Landing Barge today, the price I won at the "JJD Treasure Hunt" during the days of the latest Chicago Show.

What a beautiful piece of work!
And now I do believe that it is actually one of the "master" sets. While the boat is made out of some heavy material, all the troops and accessories are cast from Resin.

I had some time to examine the set, and very quickly got second thoughts about my initial plan of painting these figures. This will not happen. I can't do it. I'm not able to do it.
Too many areas, that I wouldn't be able to reach properly with a brush. Heck, it is difficult enough for my to get some decent paint on a figure when the area is open to me.
All these grenadiers with their muskets in front of them, no, it won't happen :wink2:

But having this set displayed as a true "one of a kind", first being a "master" set, second being a price I won, yes, that will happen ^&grin

In the pictures you see how the set came in. Very good packaged by Paul Herrmann, but unfortunately the brackets that hold the oars all came off on one side.
You see them lined up in the middle of the boat, and it won't be a big deal to glue them back on.

All the figures come in nice JJD boxes with foam cut-outs, so they are well protected.

Here are some pics now of the "treasure" I got today :smile2:

Here a little more detail.

There are 24 Grenadiers with the boat, 12 Oarsmen and 1 Tillerman.

There are 4 slightly different poses of the Grenadiers and there are also 4 slightly different poses for the Oarsmen.

Here are a few close-ups of them, and one of the Tillerman.

Cheers!

Konrad

Absolutely cool. It is quite a big sucker, too. I applaud the decision to leave it 'as is'. A very neat, one of a kind addition to your collection. Congratulations, Konrad. -- Al

It would be wonderful if John could sell the boat, rowers and troops separately.
The boat and rowers could be used for the AWI, Battle of Brooklyn/Long Island and other engagements
of that period.
Just a thought....

Hi Konrad!

Your barge is absolutely outstanding! What a wonderful set to display and, with it, an exciting story regarding how you acquired it. Like others, I think your decision to display the prototype without any paint is the best and proper one. Painted or not, I know you will love having this set in your collection.

My compliments for obtaining a terrific new item for your collection! {bravo}}

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Congratulations

What a wonderful gift. John is an exceptionally generous man as I can say from experiance as he has been kind enough to rank my caption contest entries in the top ten twice.

I to hope that this can be purchased as several sets that can be built up over time and as the finacies allow. The London bus and passengers is an example of when that makes sense.

Wish John would do a one off Washington crossing the Delaware. John can really capture the theatre in sets based on famous paintings.

Regards

RAMC

Looks great. There does seem to be enough variation in poses as to avoid making it look unnatural. With so many figures one potential drawback is that they are all made the same which gives it more of a robotic feel. Looking forward to seeing the final painted version from JJ.

Well done on winning this! It looks superb. I agree with you....I also would leave 'as is' if it were mine. I have to say the unpainted set looks great.... ethereal even. Definitely one of a kind. Lucky, lucky you!!

Konrad, it occurs to me that this is the perfect 'coloring' for a boat on a fog shrouded river or lake, in the early morning, as it comes to shore. All color would be drained in such lighting and low visibility conditions. I can see it now...:wink2: -- Al

My hearty congratulations Konrad. That is something else. As it is a master or a prototype, I would leave it as is. However, if you do decide that you wanted it painted, I know the man for the job.

What a beautiful set...you are a lucky man !

Something you will treasure for a long time, I'm sure.

Thank you for sharing this.

What a very generous and wonderful prize Konrad! ^&cool............to paint or not to paint? ^&confuse.....well, perhaps a nice shade of green might be a compromise? :rolleyes2::wink2:^&grin

Jeff :salute::

A little update on the British Landing Barge, that I received from John by email today.

He was kind enough to create a Certificate of Authenticity for the complete Barge I won at last year's Chicago Show.
Instead of mailing it to me, he might give it to me in person at this year's Show in September, providing he can make the trip.
Would be great to meet him in person.

In addition, as you can see on the left, he made a form that he can complete for any possible future winners of other sets :smile2:

Thank you very much, John.
Your generosity is much appreciated :wink2:

Aren't you glad you didn't get out of the hobby? {bravo}}
