With advance intelligence from scouting patrols advance warning could sometimes result in raids failing perhaps with the raiders being surprised themselves. Casualties would ensue.
Perhaps if brothers were on the same raid, one might become a casualty and reactions change, some then as now would pick him up and carry him, others might be so stunned and grieved as to freeze.
