I bought the first Flashman book back in 1970 and I'm reading it to my daughter (14, but reading together is fun) She liked the short stories in Flashman and the Tiger that I finally got around to reading.

The great thing now is that with the internet we can look up photos of the locations in Afghanistan and pictures of the historical characters. (even Akbar Khan) There are photos of the horrible passes the British went through in 1842 and GOOGLE maps helps with distances. Frazer's words are great but I sometimes have to see a location or a person to bring it alive.

Boy oh boy, Flashman was really a jerk in the first book. I'm amazed now that I kept up with series, Glad I did.

George MacDonald Frasier is still, along with Rudyard Kipling, my favorite author. I read the first Flashman novel when I was 14, and I have read all of them. Truly great stuff. Have you ever read his Dand MacNeil/MacAuslan series or his account of his experiences in Burma, Quartered Safe Out Here?

I read a couple of the MacAuslan stories and Pyrates. Fun.

I also read Pyrates, and I agree, very fun. You should also try Mr. American and Black Ajax, two more terrific 19th century novels by Frasier, in which Flashman (Mr. American) or his father (Black Ajax) make appearances.
