All,
Flyboy did a review on this Chinese made epic regarding the famine that the Henan province suffered during WWII. Well, I thought I would post another thread on this film because I watched it based on Flyboy's review. Let me echo his sentiments...the refugee bombing scenes are like NOTHING I have ever seen before. Absolutely incredible filmography! It may make your stomach churn watching some of these scenes, but the realism is not for the light hearted and congrats to the CG editors on this one.
The film grasps the in and outs of the politics and corruption that led to one of the worst famines (next to STALINS infamous famine) in history. The film explores the tedious position local Governors were in and the decisions they had to make in government distributed rice. Rice is the staple at which the movie revolves around, but plays a back seat to those who so desperately need it. The families, soldiers, officials and General Chiang Kai Shek himself are the mercy of a well fed and organized Japanese army who are advancing daily. So, this film in conjunction with horrible stories of the Rape of Nanking give the viewer a glimpse into the harsh realities of what China went through during WWII.
It is brutal realism through film and the addition of an array of characters (including Adrien Brody) give us the opportunity to see the film through different sets of eyes. This film is the antithesis of entertainment and more of a epic film of the tragedy that the Chinese tried to hide or simply...ignore.
Plan ahead for this flick as it is 2.5 hours long.
