I just watched this movie (available on NetFlix) and really enjoyed it! Great picture (in Blue Ray) and acting as well as superb and realistic aerial battles. This is about the Lafayette escadrille, a group of young Americans soon to be pilots who volunteered to fight along the French before the United States entered World War I. Jean Reno is great in the squadron captain role. :)

I enjoyed the movie also. The biggest disappointment would be all those red Fokker tri-planes. Could have used much more variety..Michael

The movie got a bad rap for its rather exuberant CGI and historical exaggerations but I enjoyed it quite a bit as well and own the DVD. Frequently it is useful to grant Hollywood some artistic and commercial license on such films and just appreciate what they did well.

OK , I'm the dirty old man here and I noticed that the prostitutes in the bordello scene were wearing lingerie from 10 to 15 years earlier than 1915. This is France for crying out loud!

There's plenty of period images of clothing out there including the post card art of Xavier Sager

Always good to know what the proper bordello attire is for any period.;):D I can't say the mistake bothered me but it would seem the wardrobe department made a wee error.

Guns and Underwear. That's where history movies usually slip up.

Well, the action didn't take place in Paris, so it used to take some time for the latest fashion trend to reach the far sides of the French hexagon :);)

Well yeah, but 10 years out of date? The corsets were from the late 1800s early 1900s. Corsets in the 1910 to 1920 and later were around the hips as the shape of dresses changed. The length of "drawers" got shorter too. This shows up in postcards of peasant women from the coast of France caught in the wind.

Marion Cotillard's costume in A Very Long Engagement was closer.

Hey I know this stuff. A fun side interest to just guns and uniforms.

WW1 aviation brings out the rivet counter in me. I had a few problems with the aircraft time-lines and livery but overall I take what I can get in this genre so I rather enjoyed the flying sequences and uniforms. Didn't care for the love story. I want fighting in my war movies.:D -- lancer

Errrr, Lancer, why do you think there is any fighting in any war?:D Love makes the world go round.;)

Spitfrnd, it is a character flaw of mine. Love has been making the world go round ever since Helen ran off to Troy. Now that was a real lovefest, eh?:p -- lancer

Sorry to revive this rather old thread but I just watched a very good version of this film. I say version because the original film has a 140 minute run time. The version I just watched was slotted into a 2 hour time frame. Take into account about 30 minutes of commercials and some editor did away with about 50 minutes of the original film. Normally this is a horrendous decision with horrid results. In this case the editor completely did away with the ridiculous love story and related scenes and left only the flying action and combat scenes. There is absolutely no loss to the flow of the movie. This is a superior version of the movie as a result. For once a TV editor gets my thanks. -- Al
