Thanks for all the info on foam and what to paint it with. Is there a way to undercoat the foam once the model is built to enhance the paint and maybe give the foam a bit more of a gritty texture? If I was building a stone fortress wall and I wanted to create a rougher texture is there some kind of undercoat i.e. like a mixture of white glue and water that would form over the details but remain thin enough to allow for detail? Cheers

You could try 'roughing it up' with sandpaper. This would get rid of the relatively smooth surface. By painting a dark base coat and then dry brushing lighter over the top, it will being out the rough surface better.

There are also products such as Plasti-kote 'Stone touch' spray paints, which leave a stone look, by spraying out bits of grit mixed with the paint. This can look pretty effective. Although it's solvent based, I've tried it on several types of foam, and there's been no detrimental effects, melting etc. to the foam.

Thanks Wraith. I hadn't though of sandpaper so much as I worried about maybe losing some of the detail but perhaps a very light grade and a very light touch would do the job nicely. I tend to dry brush everything but it always works so much better when the surface underneath has some "teeth". I'll give the sandpaper a shot. Thanks again. Cheers, ssorc1

If you want the surface to have some "teeth" you can brush on Gesso which is like a primer for acrylics.
