Next week on UK TV History channel there is a series called Tank overhaul.A group of enthusiasts and mechanics restore WW2 Tanks.Next week includes Panther,Sherman,Comet and Hellcat.Starts tuesday 16th Jan at 10pm.
Anyway you can tell us if there is a web site for the station where we might be able to find out if they will be showing it on the History Channel here or maybe on BBC America? Otherwise I'm green with envy!
I watched this program on the History Channel (in the US) last night and I was greatly disappointed in the quality of the program. Too much time spent on stuff other than the overhaul of the tank and no finished product
The guys, from the Military Museum of the Island of Wright, were a great bunch of fellows. I would enjoy spending some time with any of them. Its too bad that the programs producers did not pay more attention to the process and let us see more of the hard work these guys are doing. Lots of time wasted showing off the country side around England and the Island of Wright. Great country but I don't think any of those shots had anything to do with rebuilding a tank. I missed not seeing a tank taken from "sh&tpile" to "owners pride." I hope the next programs in the series are better.
I too watched the program and would have liked it much better if they would have stuck to the story and made it more technical so we could have seen more details of what the tank should look like etc. I did find it interesting when they found a part from another tank's suspension being used as a field expedient/battlefield repair. But if they had done a more detailed presentation of how things were done in the tear down I would have enjoyed it a lot more still it was fun seeing a Comet reborn.
I have watched three of the Tank Overhaul programs (the Comet, the Panther, and the Sherman). I must report that I am still greatly disappointed in the series. It (the series) can still redeem itself if and only if the last show of the series is a wrap-up program that contains the finished projects.
The Comet was never shown complete neither was the Panther (although it was closer to completion than the Comet) and the Sherman, well the 2 Sherman halves just got welded back together and the program ended. They did not even show the turret ring installation after the welding.
What a disappointment. Too many shots of abstract views of traveling down the road and D-day stuff that had not much to do with the Sherman’s restoration. I expected more from the History Channel group.
