For my Aussie friends... (1 Viewer)

Rob,

I totally support the anger dispayed, when the producers changed the Chinese Character to a European. I'm sure they could find someone who could fit the part, if not only for the authenticity, but to pay respect the brave soldier.

In the Aussie movie "Beneath Hill 60" that I've just posted a thread about, the producers used an aboriginal actor for one of the part, becuse one of the tunnelling team was that race. I'm sure if he'd been English, Irish or Scottish we would have that accent used, so why not the same racial origin.

Still, when the show comes on TV, I'll let you know about it,

John

I have to admit That I have mixed feelings on this for I feel an actor should be able to play any part but on the other hand I understand the Chinese-Australians have a right to be upset about this.I find it hard to believe they could not find a 60 yr.old Chinese actor whether he be from Australia,China,US,wherever.I remember when there was a big stink over here when Antonio Banderas was chosen to play Pancho Villa instead of a Mexican actor.Banderas also played a Arab in the 13th Warrior. Now should he have not got the part because he is not of Arabic origin?I do know that I like a movie to be authenic so I lean toward backing The Chinese-Australians. Some years ago Gerald Butler played Attila The Hun and he all the Hun parts were played by whites and that ruined the movie for me.

I hate it when they change things around like that for no good reason. It's disrespectful to the real people who lived it. I recall people being rightfully upset about that submarine movie, U-Something or other, that was fiction "based on a true story" where they changed the crew from Brits to Americans. My family left England when Oliver Cromwell took over so I have only a distant connection to the motherland, but even I was irritated by that one. My question for our Australian friends is why do the Pommies turn up as villians in every Mel Gibson film? Who were the bad guys in BraveHeart? What about The Patriot? I wouldn't be surprised to discover that the Great Humongous, the Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla from the Road Warrior was from Winchester originally and he emigrated back in 1978. OOPs, forgot about the Lethal Weapon where the villians were South Africans.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!:D

Not only was U571 a crap film it was an insult to the men of the Royal Navy who actually captured it.Hollywood constantly cast Brits as bad guys and even though it irks me (National treasure-god awful film and what was Sean Bean thinking?)its not as bad as when they change History and insult our vets for no good reason.

Now I know a lot of folk will say 'they are only film's it doesn't matter',but I'm afraid it does.Because they changed the ending of 'Gallipoli' (because it was rumoured to be not anti British enough)many folk think a British officer ordered those men to their deaths,it was not the case, the order was given by an Australian officer. The whole film is nothing more than whipped up anti British diatribe with a truly pathetic impression that the Brits were drinking tea on the beach whilst Australians died for them, they were actually supporting a New Zealand attack. We lost many more men in Gallipoli than the Anzacs did,I may be wrong here (apologies if I am)but this is not mentioned in the film.

I won't even get started on the films of Mr Gibson, although having watched the Passion of the Christ I was amazed to find Christ was not crucified by drunken English football fans.

All I say is this,if you are so narrow minded that you just have to cast a Brit as the murderer/crook/Terrorist in your film then so be it,but for gods sake show some respect to our veterans and don't change History to make money.

And as the BBC would say in perfect Queens English, that is the end of this rant and normal service is now resumed!:D;)

Geese.... I hated that movie but my CATHOLIC wife still defends it. Mel's "bad" Mayans in Apocalypto speak "New York" in the subtitles. "I'm walking here!"

I note that it may be because of the actors and the country the movies was made in but Nazi officers usually have British accents as do the Imperial Forces in Star Wars. Of Imperial Romans speak perfect British because of all the Shakespeareans in the films.

It's a little better in films since Charlie Chan. There has been progress since the American and European movie going public now accepts a hero or main character from another race.

Scott, its mainly the films that insult our vets that annoy me,some of the other stereotypes are really funny. There was an episode of 'Lost' a couple of years back in which two characters were in London.I kid you not, in the background they managed to squeeze; A Red telephone box, Underground station sign, Red Bus, Black cab and a Policeman walking by!!.Just the idea of finding a cab or a bus when you need one is a laugh!;):D

Agree with you about the Passion, the torture went on and on didn't it.I don't know enough about Roman torture procedure to know if this is true or not, although I understand 'scourging' was a hideous punishment.

In these times almost everyone gets greatly offended if their race or ethnic group is shown in a bad way somehow in a movie so the only ones you can offend and get a way with it is Nazis who no one would admit to being and the Brits because they were the big bad bullies who conquered everyone and treated them unfairly.Never mind that everyone and I mean everyone sometimes treats others different than their own.

They did get the spear correct as a Pilum...I like that.

I remember that Jim Thorpe the Native American foot ball player objected to Anthony Quinn playing him in the film (Burt Lancaster played him) because Quinn was a Mexican.
Movies have to use "short hand" get suggest locations shot on the back lot. All that London stuff is in the same line of all Parisian streets have that accordion music in the background or the Call to Prayer to let you know it's somewhere Muslim. To do my area..it's snow, seagulls scawking or fifes and drums playing Yankee Doodle.

Im not sure why you want to ask us about Mel Gibson he was born in the United States.
and as far as i know he has no Real Estate or buisness interest in Australia.
The Lord Humongous was great in Mad Max2 but please tell me you did watch the Australian version

Sometimes it's a thoughtless offense as though we all think that way about something or some people. Anyone remember the ugly black centauress with the donkey body in Disney's Fantasia? She's been edited out. The pretty black centauresses with Zebra bodies were left in.

As far a movies go...why offend the audience on purpose if you know it there's no artistic reason for the shock and you now know that people won't be insulted any more w/o speaking up? It looks like that in the US as various groups get some political or economic clout, they speak up.

Vets and history buffs should speak up in regard to the original post.

Well said Scott,if as film fans/History buffs we do speak up we may get better quality films in future:cool:
