Recently got some foreign language war films on Amazon. If you don't mind subtitles they are excellent films and are mostly fairly recent releases:

Blessed by Fire (Argentinian conscripts on the Falklands 1982) - Argentinian
Assembly (Chinese civil war in 1948) - Chinese
Intimate Enemies (Algeria 1959) - French
Dark Blue World (Czech pilots in the Battle of Britain/Imprisoned as traitors by their countrymen after the war) - Czech
Beaufort (Israeli soldiers in the Lebanon in 2000) - Israeli.
9th Company (Russian soldiers in Afganistan in 1988) - Russian
Zvezda (The Star) (Russian soldiers on the Polish Front separating the Russians & Germans WWII) - Russian
Tae Guk Gi (Brotherhood) - Korea - Korean
Indigènes (Days of Glory) WWII Algeria/France - French
Come and See (1985 film. Russian partisans WW11) Very harrowing film! -Russian.

Some are blood and guts films, some more thought provoking, but all very enjoyable to watch.

Scrolling through old threads I found this one.

I will definately be checking out a few of these!

I've seen most of them ..9th Company is the russian Platoon (if you remember a few scenes you'll find it identical), Blessed by Fire is a great film, very moving , I appreciated much Intimate Enemies describing the evils of that conflict (algeria)(particularly moving the scenes of the old algerian people showing the medal for the great war and one the final scenes with the "home made" movies), i didn't like so much Indigenes (a movie on the Goumiers and the french colonial troops was due but they didn't show the other face of the medal with rapes and killings made on the poor italian women , my relatives too)..Dark Blue World is wonderful from every point of view , story , photograpy, acting, the way in which the young pilots learn their trade in England is very funny.. The eastern movies are good for the stunts and action , a bit "heavy" for the acting specially Assembly..Tagukgi is a bit longer than due and with too many turning of coats..Come and See is a piece of art for some sequence, and really remain impressed in your mind (the massacre..) ..i didn't see the Israeli one and the other russian film..but if i can sugest one deserving a vision is They fought for their Motherland by Bondarchuk (Waterloo and War and Peace fame).

The only one I saw was Indigenes and thought that was very good. Thanks for the tips on the others.
